The Sky Is Pink is a 2019 Indian Hindi-language biographical film about the family of Aisha Chaudhary, a young woman who became a motivational speaker while suffering severe illness. It is directed by Shonali Bose and co-produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur, Ronnie Screwvala and Priyanka Chopra Jonas under the banner of RSVP Movies, Roy Kapur Films and Purple Pebble Pictures. Starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Farhan Akhtar, Zaira Wasim and Rohit Suresh Saraf, the film marked Chopra Jonas's return after a three-year break from Bollywood and also the final appearance of Wasim prior to her departure from the industry.

Based on the love story of a couple spanning 25 years, the story is told through the lens of their spunky teenage daughter – Aisha Chaudhary, who was born with SCID and later diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis resulting from treatment.

Principal photography began in August 2018, and was completed on 11 March 2019. It premiered at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival on 13 September 2019, and was theatrically released worldwide on 11 October. It did not perform well at the box office. The Sky Is Pink received generally positive reviews, with praise for Chopra Jonas, Akhtar, and Wasim's performances. The film received three Filmfare Awards nominations: Best Film (Critics), Best Actress for Chopra and Best Supporting Actress for Wasim.

Plot

The movie is told from the point of view of Aisha Chaudhary about the emotional and physical tolls on her parents after they found out she has SCID. Aditi and Niren are a young couple who come from different backgrounds. Where on one hand Niren is from a grounded middle-class family, Aditi is from the posh end of the town. The couple are shown to be in love, with "an active sex life" as Aisha's narration describes.

The passionate and happy couple get married, and Aditi becomes pregnant with their first child Tanya, who dies within months of her birth. Baby Tanya used to frequently become ill and, while Aditi was convinced it was a serious issue, Niren used to brush it off. Niren believed that negligence was the reason Tanya couldn't be treated sooner and blamed himself for the death of his child. As Aditi was mourning the death of her child, she was consoled by a Catholic church nun and decided to be baptised. Niren and Aditi have a second child Ishaan.

A few years later, Aditi bore their third child, another daughter, Aisha.

The little girl, Aisha was born with the same Severe combined immunodeficiency,SCID which was a heart wrenching thing for both her parents. So for their daughters sake they decided to move to London while Naren lived with his family and his son, Ishaan in India. Aditi lived with Aisha in London in a small apartment. Months went by and Niren came to London to meet his wife and his daughter where Aditi told him that they had to live here for a very long time. They decided to move here permanently till Aisha got better and got their son to London with them. Several years later, Aisha has finally gotten better and Niren and Aditi decide to move back to India with their families. They shifted to the outskirts of Delhi and bought an extravagant and massive bungalow.

Production

The production of the film started when Aisha Chaudhary's mother Aditi approached Shonali Bose to make a film about her daughter. Chaudhary had seen the trailer of Bose's last film Margarita with a Straw (2015) thirty times and was eager to watch the film, saying "I hope I live to see this film." However, she passed away at the age of 18 after being diagnosed with Pulmonary fibrosis, two weeks after watching the trailer and never got to see the film. Nine months later, Aditi Chaudhary tracked down Bose who was then living in Los Angeles. Aditi was adamant as she only wanted Bose to tell the story of her daughter. Initially, they interacted over Skype. Later, Bose personally interviewed both Aditi and Niren Chaudhary for eight hours a day for two weeks to gather all the details. Bose said that "They talked and cried and healed through the process of those narrations." Bose had said that she was drawn towards the story as she herself had lost her son so was she ready to explore the subject cinematically and bringing some of her own unique perspective to it. However, she was more interested in telling the story of Aditi and Niren, a couple, dealing with the illness of their child, saying "I was drawn to the story, not of a heroic teenager defying death, but the parents who had to deal with it." Bose said she was "intrigued and inspired" by the Chaudharys' relationship, adding "It is a rare couple who survive the death of their child." She said she wanted to explore "what happens to a love story, to a marriage, when faced with the loss of a child", explaining "My own marriage ended when I lost my son. 80% of people’s marriages end when they lose a child."

Bose began writing the screenplay after the narration she had heard from the Chaudharys by approaching it as a love story of two people who fell in love when they were "only 16 and now at 57 are still inseparable" despite major tragedies that tear most couples apart. She wanted to make an unusual romantic film and the lives of Aditi and Niren were exactly unusual like the film she wanted to make. Bose wanted to make the film as true to the real life events as it unfolded in real life, without fictionalising or deflecting from actual incidents. She said "The story, facts and events in the film are completely true. I wrote the script as close as possible to the truth. So, when deciding the look and feel of the film, I decided to stay with realism and be as authentic as possible." While writing the script, Bose met with Aisha's family and friends and inquired everything about her. She also read Aisha's writing, including her emails to her brother and the artwork she had made. Bose revealed that feel connected with Aisha even though they never met. In handling the subject, Bose consciously chose to be realistic and avoid melodramatic and manipulative set-ups to express emotions. In an interview with Scroll, Bose revealed that in early drafts, Aditi was the main protagonist as she was written to be the the central figure in the story, but later strengthened Niren's role and they became equal in the final draft.

Filming began on 8 August 2018 in Mumbai. The second schedule of the film began on 13 October 2018 in London and wrapped on 17 October 2018. It was part of the Delhi schedule which wrapped in the last week of November 2018. The filming is completed on 11 March 2019 in Andaman Islands A song was shot in June 2019 in Mumbai for the film.

Marketing and release

A first look was released on 23 July 2019. The poster was released on 8 September 2019, followed by a trailer on 10 September by RSVP Movies.

The Sky Is Pink premiered at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival on 13 September 2019, and was theatrically released worldwide on 11 October. The film is set to have its world digital premiere on Netflix on the 11th December.

Reception

Critical response

The film received generally positive reviews. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 71% based on 17 reviews, with an average rating of 6/10.

Devesh Sharma of Filmfare rated the film four stars out of five, lauding the film's ability to make viewers laugh despite its tragic undertone. He concluded, writing "this bitter-sweet film will make you laugh, will make you cry and will surely make you ruminate on the glorious uncertainty of life." Writing for Mid Day, film critic Mayank Shekhar rated the film with three and half stars out of five, praising Bose for telling an "astonishingly dark personal story with reasonable hope" that never felt exploitative or manipulative. He complemented the "smart" screenplay which he felt was structured to dive viewers "deeper and deeper" into the characters and circumstances on screen. Priyanka Sinha Jha of CNN-News18, praising Chopra Jonas, Akhtar and Wasim for their performances, and wrote, "The real hero in this instance, however, would have to be the zany uplifting story and to that effect, with The Sky is Pink, Bose delivers a fitting salutation to life." Writing for NDTV Saibal Chatterjee, rated the film with three and half stars out of five, and praised Bose for her direction and writing. Sreeparna Sengupta of The Times of India gave the film three and half stars out of five, praising the performances of Chopra Jonas, Akhtar and Wasim, she noted that the film scored high on the emotional quotient. She opined that though the film was lengthy and screenplay needed more focus, 'the emotional arc' and the 'stellar performances' kept the interest going. Concluding, she wrote, "The Sky is Pink is definitely a stirring watch." Teo Bugbee of The New York Times lauded Bose for achieving a balanced tone in the film, writing "The writer and director Shonali Bose bounces from tone to tone, livening the somber subject matter with bright hues, quippy dialogue and an ever-jubilant score."

Rajeev Masand criticised the film's "blatant manipulation" but added that "there are moments that left me with a heavy heart". Dennis Harvey of Variety too disliked the film and wrote that the "somewhat bland polish on all levels doesn’t much assist the raw pain that should be at this story’s center". Vinayak Chakraborty of Outlook rated the film with three stars out of five, criticizing the "flashback-driven storyline" and its runtime which he felt was too long at nearly two and half hours. However, he opined that the film still works with all its flaws. Anupama Chopra of Film Companion found the film to be "sensitive" but highly "sanitized". She wrote "The Sky is Pink is sincere and heartfelt but it never gets raw or messy." Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express rated the film with two stars out of five. According to her, the film only occasionally worked. She opined the film felt "both constructed and sentimental", writing "With the material at hand, you expect a legitimate heart-breaker but this one left me mostly unmoved."

Box office

The Sky Is Pink collected ₹2.50 crore on the opening day, ₹4.00 crore on the second day, and ₹4.20 on the third day, taking its opening weekend collection to ₹10.70 crore in India. Film earned ₹15.15 crore in its first week.

As of 24 October 2019, with a gross of ₹23.85 crore in India and ₹10.56 crore overseas, the film has a worldwide gross collection of ₹34.41 crore.
