Captain Tom Moore (b. April, 1920) is a 99 year old British fund-raiser and an ex-army veteran who embarked on a walking initiative to complete 100 laps of his garden in Bedfordshire on Monday, 6 April 2020 to raise funds for the National Health Service, United Kingdom to aid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fund raising walk

Walking with the aid of a walking frame, Captain Moore aimed to walk 100 laps of the 25-metre (82ft) loop in his 50 metre long garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire in 10-lap chunks, before his 100th birthday on 30 April 2020 to raise money for the NHS. Moore began raising funds with an initial target of one thousand pounds to thank the healthcare workers of NHS who continue to work hard throughout the corona-virus pandemic and who earlier in his life helped him with the treatment for cancer and a broken hip.

The initial £1,000 pound goal was realised on Friday 10 April hence the target was subsequently increased to £100,000 and then to £500,000 as more people around the world got involved.

The fund-raising soared exponentially when the British media got light of the endeavour and as of Tuesday, 14 April, Captain Moore’s JustGiving page has raised an excess of £4.1 million for NHS Charities Together. Moore who has recently taken to Twitter has expressed joy over accumulating such a staggering amount of money for the NHS.

Funds raised by Moore is being spent on well-being packs for National Health Service staff facilitating rest and recuperation rooms, devices to enable hospital patients to keep in contact with family members, and community groups who support patients once discharged from hospitals.

Captain Moore is currently doing 10 laps a day of his back garden in order to achieve his initial aim of 100 laps, he has now said he will not stop and aims to do another 100 laps.

Biography

Captain Moore was born and raised in Keighley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom and attended the Keighley Grammar School as a child and later went on to complete an apprenticeship as a Civil Engineer. He enlisted in 8 Duke of Wellington (145 Royal Armoured Corps) at the beginning of World War II, and in 1940 was selected for Officer Training. After completion he rose to the rank of Captain and was posted in the 9 DWR in India and served and fought in India, Arakan and Burma. After completion of his duties abroad Moore returned to United Kingdom and became an Instructor at The Armoured Fighting Vehicle School in Bovington. In 2007 he moved to Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire with his daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren.
