The planning network of the Macao Light Transit System

Macao Light Transit System is a planned mass transit system for Macau Special Administrative Region, China. When completed it will serve passengers from the Macau Peninsula, Taipa island, the Cotai reclamation and Macau International Airport. The proposal was introduced to the public by the Government of Macau in October 2006.

Planning

System

The proposed system is a driverless and rubber-tyred light rail system, similar to the Singapore Light Rapid Transit. The tracks will be a mix of elevated guideways and underground tunnels, ensuring a dedicated right-of-way separated from road traffic.

Network

The network would be comprised of three lines:

  1. Loop Line, serving the peninsula;
  2. Macao-Taipa Line, linking the peninsula with Taipa and Cotai. It is planned to utilize reserved space in the lower deck of the Ponte de Sai Van (Sai Van Bridge).
  3. Airport Shuttle Line, acting as a spur line of the Macao-Taipa Line to the Airport.

The total service length of the whole network is expected to be 27 km. At an arrangement of 4-cars per train, passenger capacity would be about 400. Maximum ridership is predicted to be about 15,400 passengers per hour.


Cost and timetable

The estimated cost for the first stage of construction consisting of 26 stations, is MOP$4.2 billion (about USD$523 million). It is expected that this amount is to be fully sponsored by the Government of Macau as a part of their comprehensive public transportation project. Construction for the first stage of the project may require 42 months for completion. The whole planned network may require 8 years to be completely built.
