The following is a list of characters from the U.S. version of The Office. The Office is a television series based on the British television comedy of the same name. The format of the series, which intersperses traditional situation comedy segments with mock interviews with the show's characters, provides the audience access to the ongoing interior monologues for all of the main characters, as well as occasional insights into other characters within the show.
Similarities between characters in the U.S and U.K. versions is summarized separately.
Main characters
Michael Scott
Michael Gary Scott — played by Steve Carell — is the unctuous Regional Manager of a branch office of a paper supply company called Dunder Mifflin. As noted in the show's official summary , Michael thinks of himself as a combination of office comedian and business sage, two misunderstandings that often lead to patently inappropriate behavior. He attends classes in improvisational comedy, and believes that his skills are among the best in the world. Michael's acting out—sometimes absurd, sometimes pathetic—provides a major source of comedy for the show.
Michael perceives his role at Dunder Mifflin as a combination leader, entertainer, and friend of his employees. His gregarious personality and awkward attempts at humor cause most members of the office to try to avoid him. Michael has occasionally shown flashes of business competence, including breaking a previous Staples, Inc., stronghold to broker a deal to distribute Hammermill paper products and landing a major account with Scranton's state county office.
Michael drives a late model Chrysler Sebring convertible. He was born on March 15.
Dwight Schrute
Dwight Kurt Schrute — played by Rainn Wilson — is a pretentious, megalomaniacal, socially awkward Assistant (to the) Regional Manager and honorary branch Security Advisor. He has a severe superiority complex, and insisted his job title made him the de facto "Assistant Regional Manager", even before being given that title. Dwight craves authority, and relishes any minor task that he is given that allows him to give orders to the other employees; he often assumes authority even when it is not handed to him. Dwight lives on and operates a beet farm with his cousin, Mose. Dwight enjoys paintball, anime (he is seen wearing a shirt with the name of an anime convention printed on it in seasons one and two), has a purple belt in karate and is as dedicated to his sensei as he is to Michael, to whom he commonly sucks up despite his boss's degrading comments. As of the second season, Dwight and Angela have been secretly dating. Dwight is a target of practical jokes orchestrated by Jim and Pam. Dwight drives a 1987 Pontiac Trans Am.
Jim Halpert
Jim Halpert — played by John Krasinski — works in Sales. Professionally, he's a valued employee who has received a couple of promotions during the show's first three seasons, becoming most recently the Number 2 Man at the branch of Dunder-Mifflin managed by Michael. An ongoing story arc for the series is the relationship between Jim and Pam, the receptionist. Jim once confided in Michael about his romantic feelings for Pam, but finally, after revealing his true feelings and kissing her in the episode "Casino Night", concluded Pam would marry Roy, and decided to take a promotion and transfer to another branch. Later, when his new boss abandoned the company, Jim was made the Number 2 Man at the Scranton Branch. Jim has rallied his coworkers for an Office Olympics competition, and invited them to a party at his house (in the episode "E-mail Surveillance"). In the episode, "The Merger", he said to Pam that he was currently seeing someone. It was hinted in "The Merger", and then was confirmed in "The Convict" that he was seeing Karen Filippelli. He loves practical jokes, especially on Andy or Dwight. Jim drives a Toyota Corolla sedan made after 2000.
Pam Beesly
Pamela Beesly — played by Jenna Fischer — is the sweet office Receptionist bearing the brunt of Michael's awkward behavior. She sometimes protects Michael from his own bad habits; in one episode, "Casino Night", she demonstrated how she improved Michael's phone etiquette by not transferring calls to him right away, pausing to allow him to get a joke out of his system. Pam began the series engaged to warehouse worker Roy; the engagement continued for two full seasons until days before their wedding, Pam broke off the engagement. Pam enjoyed former co-worker Jim's attention, and together they brainstormed malicious pranks to play on Dwight. Rumors of Jim and Pam's flirtations circulated through the office at times. After having feared the prospect of winning another "World's Longest Engagement" award, Pam was relieved to win the "Whitest Sneakers" award at the 8th annual Dundie Awards. Her favorite flavor of yogurt is mixed berry. She dislikes country music, competitive frisbee, hunting, high-pitched male love ballads, and Pig Latin. She drives a Toyota Yaris hatchback.
Ryan Howard
Ryan Howard — played by B.J. Novak — is a competent, quiet, young Sales Representative who started as a temp and is usually a step ahead of his co-workers. He attends business school at night, and arguably knows more about business than his boss. He feels quite uncomfortable around many of his co-workers, but unwittingly began a relationship with Kelly Kapoor, when the pair hooked up on the eve of Valentine's Day. Michael, who stated in a game of "Who'd You Do?" that he would have sex with Ryan because he is going to own his own business, appears to have a "man-crush" on Ryan and named him "Hottest in the Office" at the 8th Annual Dundie Awards. Try as he might to avoid doing so, Ryan often finds himself being assigned such tasks as being Todd Packer's designated driver and retrieving childhood videotapes from Michael's mother's house. Ryan earned himself the nickname of 'the fire guy' after he accidentally left some food in the toaster oven and started a fire in the office.
Accounting department
Angela Martin
Angela Martin — played by Angela Kinsey — Accounting Supervisor. A judgmental, homophobic, pious individual, Angela is head of the accounting department and a safety officer. She despises Will and Grace — except those episodes with appearances by Harry Connick Jr. Though she is a constant source of complaints to Human Resources, she redacts those lodged against Dwight, who calls her "monkey", at the onset of their secret romance. She had a bobble-head doll made in Dwight's likeness as a Valentine's Day gift, and received a key to his house in return. Angela secretly follows Dwight to the office supply convention in Philadelphia under the name Jane Doe. Angela lives with several cats, displays posters of infants posed as adults, is a vegetarian and a singer, and believes orange to be a "whorish" color. Angela bottles up her emotions to the point that on occasion she has private, emotional outbursts over relatively trivial matters. Angela refuses to accept the "Tight Ass" award at the 8th Annual Dundie Awards. Angela hints she has a crush on Roy and admits she would choose Roy over Jim if pressed on the matter. She claims to weigh ninety pounds. She drives a Ford Focus.
Oscar Martinez
Oscar Martinez — played by Oscar Nuñez — Accountant. Oscar is an American-born Latino of Mexican descent, whose parents emigrated from their home country. He plays a paper football game (called Hateball) with Kevin whenever Michael isn't around and keeps a two-year running total of their scores. Oscar enjoys ice skating, likes the office thermostat to be set to a chilly 66 degrees, and claims to be more offended by Angela's kitschy posters featuring infants posed as blues musicians than by hardcore pornography. Oscar is gay and lives with his partner, Gil. The pair go on a three-month vacation to Europe on Dunder-Mifflin's tab with exclusive use of the company car, as consideration for his agreement to forbear from suing the company after Michael publicly outs Oscar in the season three premiere. He wins the "Show Me The Money" award at the 8th Annual Dundie Awards. He drives a Saturn ION.
Kevin Malone
Kevin Malone — played by Brian Baumgartner — Accountant. Kevin is bald, overweight, slow-witted, and seems to have just two facial expressions: a scowl or an impish grin. He is typically quite subdued with his humorous hangdog face. A Detroit Pistons fan, Kevin has shown a talent for basketball, paper football office game called "Hateball", and "How Many M&M's Can You Put In Your Mouth?" His favorite number is known to be 69 in reference to the the sexual position. Kevin is engaged to a woman named Stacy, who has a daughter named Abby. Kevin plays drums and is also the lead singer in a local tribute band. The group initially was a Steve Miller Band tribute called Jokers and Tokers, but recently refocused on the music of The Police, and rebranded accordingly as "Scrantonicity," an homage to Synchronicity. Kevin wins the "Don't Go In There After Me" award at the 8th Annual Dundie Awards. In 2002, Kevin won the $2,500 No Limit Deuce to Seven Draw Tournament at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.
Other office employees
Stanley Hudson
Stanley Hudson — played by Leslie David Baker — Sales Representative. Hudson is a serious, hardworking employee, who dislikes Dunder-Mifflin and believes he is underpaid. In fact, he is overjoyed when he hears that the office may shut down in "Branch Closing", because the pay he would receive from the severance package would be enough to allow him to retire. One of the highlights of Stanley's work-year is Pretzel Day. Stanley only thinly attempts to hide his disgust and disrespect for Michael, who tends to make inadvertently offensive remarks to Stanley based on racial stereotypes, such as expecting Stanley to be a good basketball player. Stanley generally prefers working on crossword puzzles during the various staff meetings rather than giving his undivided attention to Michael, thus giving him the nickname "The Crossword Puzzle Guy". He has two children, one known to be his child from a previous marriage. He won the "Great Work" award at the 7th Annual Dundie Awards, and didn't know what to make of the "Fine Work" award he won the following year. While very serious, even Stanley does come around such as in the Office Olympics, when he becomes a participant, despite telling Jim earlier that his office game is "Work real hard so my kids can go to college." When generally bored and unhappy (particularly involving Michael), Stanley simply props his elbows on a table and rests his face between his hands to protest his boredom. Until the merger, Stanley was the only African-American employee and was annoyed by Martin Nash's attempt to befriend him. He is extremely protective of his daughter, threatening violence against anyone who he believes to be flirting with her.
Phyllis Lapin
Phyllis Lapin — played by Phyllis Smith — Sales Representative. Phyllis is an introvert motherly type often mistaken as older than her age. She is often insulted and embarrassed by former classmate Michael and is the target of many of his crude jokes, but like the rest of the staff, she tolerates his behavior. However in Gay Witch Hunt she insults Michael by telling him that everyone thought he was gay in high school, and proves she can be witty at times. Phyllis often is the first to offer her services when a volunteer is requested by happily saying "I'll do it". She loves "girl talk" and gossip and believes herself to be closer to her co-workers than she really is. Phyllis won a gold medal in the game of "Flonkerton" at the Office Olympics.Phyllis serves on the party planning committee where she often butts heads with hypercritical Angela. She suffered from scoliosis as a child and went on to play high school basketball. She is engaged to Bob Vance of Vance Refrigeration, a relationship that pulled her from the depths of extreme depression and suicidal thoughts. She wins the "Busiest Beaver" award at the 8th Annual Dundie Awards, although, due to an error, her statue lamentably reads "Bushiest Beaver". Phyllis admits that if she could sleep with one person in the office, it would be Jim. Phyllis also shocks the room during a "sexual harassment" seminar, by asking if one-night stands are included in a rule requiring reporting office romances to human resources.
Meredith Palmer
Meredith Palmer — played by Kate Flannery — Customer Service/Purchasing/Accountant. Meredith is a twice-divorced, quiet, red-haired woman and an alcoholic who doesn't like the office lights on in the morning. When drunk, she has a tendency to come on very strong to men around her. Palmer joined Alcoholics Anonymous in the second season and attempts to follow through on New Year's resolutions to quit drinking (on weekdays) but never succeeds. Her divorces and her hysterectomy both have been mocked by Michael. Meredith drives a Ford Aerostar minivan and has custody of her son, Jake, with a history of troublemaking, while her ex-husband has custody of their good daughter Wendy . She is allergic to dairy products. She is also once caught eating Angela's waterless hand sanitizer (which is alcohol-based). She wins the "Grace Under Fire" award at the 7th Annual Dundie Awards. Michael makes the entire office throw a month-early birthday party for Meredith in the first season in hopes of relieving the stress from downsizing rumors.
Kelly Kapoor
Kelly Kapoor — played by Mindy Kaling (a scriptwriter for the show) — Customer Service Representative. Kelly is bubbly and somewhat immature. She likes to engage in small talk, often about topics that a teenager might discuss. Kelly seems also to have the capacity to play dumb, as evidenced by a conspiratorial wink to a camera in "Boys and Girls". She is involved in an on-again, off-again relationship with Ryan, and drops hints (of varying subtlety) that she wants to marry him and have his children as soon as possible. At a Diwali festival, Kelly's parents criticize Ryan for not making enough money and suggest that she go for a particular, more successful man of Indian descent. Kelly had a sister who passed away and has four living sisters who also enjoy gossip. She wins the "Spicy Curry" award at the 8th Annual Dundie Awards. The award is not Michael's first acknowledgement of her Indian heritage; he speaks to her in a stereotypical Indian accent during a Diversity Day activity and is slapped across the face for it. She dresses up as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz on Halloween, which prompts Michael to say, "Interesting take on Dorothy" followed by Michael suggesting that she wear a soccer uniform and dress like Jess Bhamra, a character of Indian descent in Bend it like Beckham. When she sees Jim for the first time after the merger between Stamford and Scranton, Jim asks her about what was going in her life, and Kelly responds by talking about Tom Cruise's daughter Suri and Brad Pitt's daughter Shiloh.
Creed Bratton
Creed Bratton — played by Creed Bratton (parodying himself) — Quality Assurance. A taciturn quality assurance representative, Creed lives in Toronto, spending three nights a week there in order to milk the welfare state. The remainder of the week he sleeps in his cubicle, using the office water cooler to bathe.
Creed is older than all of the other employees and was originally hired by Dunder Mifflin in the late 1980s, when Ed Truck was still regional manager. Creed spent time in an iron lung as a teenager, was a member of The Grass Roots, and once toured with Cream and Janis Joplin. He admits that during his rock career, he may have had gay sex ("there was no way of knowing"). Following his rock career, he had his own radio show in the 1970s as DJ Wacky Weed Creed. He has concentration problems due to his drug use during his rock career and is unfamiliar with many of his coworkers. Creed has four toes on his right foot (losing one because his parents bound his feet as a young child) and enjoys arcade-style light gun shooting games. He speaks semi-fluent Chinese and has friends in Hong Kong. He can identify strains of cannabis in high-resolution photographs and snacks on nutritious, fragrant mung bean sprouts he keeps stashed in his desk on a damp paper towel, though he admits "they smell like death." In the episode "Diwali", he immediately recognizes a sexual position in the Kama Sutra by name (the "Union of the Monkey"). He casually admits a passion for stealing without a care. In the episode "Branch Closing" he expands on this by selling $1200 worth of office equipment when he thinks his branch is closing. Creed once saved his job by convincing Michael to fire Devon instead. Until Casino Night, Creed never owned a refrigerator.
Andy Bernard
Andy Bernard — played by Ed Helms — Regional Director in Charge of Sales. Andy worked with Jim in the Stamford branch and transferred to Scranton after the branch's closure. In Stamford, Andy sat in front of Jim and calls him "Big Tuna". Andy fancies himself a ladies man with a "rollercoaster friendship" with coworker Karen. An alumnus of Cornell University, Andy brags he never studied, got drunk every night, and still graduated in four years. A fan of The Cardigans and Indigo Girls, Andy was a member of the fictional a cappella group "Here Comes Treble," to which he pays homage with his screen name in Call of Duty, a game at which he is ferociously competitive to the extent he threatened to "kill for real" during a planning session for the game. When pranked by Big Tuna, Andy flew into a rage. Despite his rage, Andy may like Jim, having offered to share his "roomy twin" air mattress in the episode "Diwali". However, both men were extremely drunk at the time, having spent the evening taking shots of Jägermeister. Andy now works in the Scranton branch, where he makes several attempts to gain Michael's favor, including trying to get insider info from Jim and mirroring Michael's personality. It is clear that Dwight feels threatened by Andy, who says that he has more power as Regional Director of Sales than Dwight has as Assistant (no longer 'to the') Regional Manager. While Dwight was once #2 in the office, he is now left to duke it with Andy for the #3 position due to Jim's promotion. Andy is referred to by Kevin as "the Penguin". He drives a Nissan Xterra.
Karen Filippelli
Karen Filippelli — played by Rashida Jones — Sales Representative. Karen worked with Jim in the Stamford branch, and they began dating after they were transferred to Scranton after the Stamford branch's closure. She initially was annoyed by Jim's trademark mugging at the camera but developed feelings for him. While playing Call of Duty (part of a team-building exercise among Stamford branch employees), she noted in a whisper to the camera of how "cute" it is when Jim's character is caught stuck in a corner and is "trying to shoot with smoke grenades", and later created a small explosion of paper clips when Jim pretends to throw a grenade at her. She has admitted liking Jim, despite not thinking Jim shared this feeling as strongly. In "The Convict" Jim reveals that they have started seeing each other, but he is not ready to talk about it. She is Italian and trilingual (speaks French & Italian) and enjoys both first-person shooter PC games and Herr's Salt and Vinegar potato chips. She drives an Isuzu Rodeo. Karen was somewhat taken aback when Michael first met her and, commenting on how "exotic" she looks, asked her, "was your dad a G.I.?"
Hannah Smoterich-Barr
Hannah Smotrich-Barr — played by Ursula Burton. Hannah Smoterich-Barr worked at the Stamford branch, and was one of the employees transferred to Scranton. Hannah had unpleasant encounters with Ryan (who stared at her while she was using a breast milk pump) and Creed (who took a photo of her left breast while she was using the pump and put it on his computer) on her first day. She dresses her infant son (who she brings into the office) in pink because she says it is his favorite color.
Warehouse employees
Roy Anderson
Roy Anderson — played by David Denman — Dock Worker. Roy was Pam's fiancé until she breaks off the engagement. During their long engagement, Roy, on more than one occasion, had seen Jim flirting with Pam. He claims not to mind, as he likes how Pam is less talkative after having spent time with Jim. He takes Pam to a minor league hockey game for their first date and brings his brother along, eventually leaving the game without her. He is often bored and does not like company get-togethers, particularly when there's no open bar, and is seen on more than one occasion leaving office parties early. In "The Fire" he stated that he would "do" Angela while playing "Who'd You Do". He vehemently refuses to let Pam apply to a company training program that could have advanced her talents as an artist, and is generally regarded as a boorish, inconsiderate, ill-mannered lout with a minimal sense of humor. Roy drives a dark colored Dodge Ram pickup truck, and spent a sizable portion of his wedding money on two jet skis . Roy selected Scrantonicity to perform at his wedding reception. After Pam ends their engagement, Roy stops taking care of himself, starts drinking, and is eventually arrested for driving under the influence. Now recovered, he intends to win Pam back, regretting how he took her for granted and wanting to make it up to her.
Darryl Philbin
Darryl Philbin — played by Craig Robinson — Warehouse Supervisor. Darryl is the Warehouse supervisor. Michael refers to him as "Mista Rogers," a nickname with an interesting evolution. It began as Regis (as Darryl's last name is Philbin), then Reeg, Roger, and finally Mista Rogers. Darryl once attempted to organize the warehouse workers into a union, but his efforts were quickly stamped out by Jan. Being in a position of responsibility in a potentially hazardous work area, he dislikes Michael's disregard for rules or safety, who often disrupts their work schedule and delays their shipments from going out on time. He is usually forced into Michael's scheduling of events in the warehouse, such as a "Men's Day" workgroup session, and a "Casino Night" mock-casino. As a subtle prank and possible retort to Michael's antics, Darryl taught Michael false slang words, such as "goin' mach five", "fleece it out" and "dinkin' flicka," although Michael is still unaware that such slang does not exist. In addition, Darryl taught Michael a ridiculous handshake that Michael believes to be "ghetto," when in fact he looks nerdy in doing so. Darryl seems to be the only character on the show who calls Michael "Mike" besides Andy. Michael is secretly wary of Darryl and calls on Dwight to be his bodyguard when Darryl asks if he can borrow his Santa hat. He is musically trained on the piano, and plays the synthesizer at parties.
Lonny
Lonny — played by Patrice Oneal — Dock Worker. Lonny joins his friend Darryl in open displays of irritation and intimidation toward Michael. He became a vocal supporter of Darryl in trying to establish a union, citing the low pay they receive in comparison to the office employees. He is known most notably for yelling at Michael for destroying the entire warehouse. "Dammit, Michael!"
Madge
Madge — played by Karly Rothenberg — Dock Worker. Madge is a female warehouse employee who played against the office team during the basketball game (which led to Michael's crude reference to her as "the East German gal"). When Michael led the male office workers into the warehouse for some "guy time," Madge excused herself from the proceedings.
Phillip
Phillip is a Dock Worker and one who is visibly shocked at Michael's antics.
Lester
Lester is a Dock Worker.
Corporate employees
Jan Levinson
Jan Levinson — played by Melora Hardin — Corporate Manager. Jan is Michael's superior at corporate. A very driven, successful woman, Jan's managerial style is a complete clash to Michael's laid back business style. Jan is usually reprimanding Michael for failing to perform, violating company policy or trying to flirt with her. Jan generally gets more respect from the office than Michael does. Her marriage ended in divorce due partially to Jan's desire for children, a dream not shared by her ex-husband. Prior to that she went by the name Jan Levinson-Gould, but dropped Gould because of the divorce. In the pilot episode, Michael referred to her as Hillary Rodham Clinton (converting the joke from the British Office when David Brent refers to Jan's equivalent character as Camilla Parker Bowles). She once had a drunken fling with Michael after a business meeting, and immediately regretted it, going as far as to accuse him of slipping something in her drink. According to Michael's reports, they "made out" and then she fell asleep on his arm. Afterward she was forced to reject multiple advances by Michael, but in a moment of weakness on Valentine's Day, passionately kissed him at the corporate headquarters because she was overcome by a brief glimpse at Michael's sense of honour. Her relationship with Michael may prove that "opposites attract" as it seems that although many things about Michael repulse and infuriate her, she is still drawn to him. In "Casino Night" it is strongly hinted that she had intended to spend the night with Michael, but is forced to drive back to New York after discovering that Michael has also asked Carol to the event. Since then, her actions as Michael's boss have come under scrutiny from the Scranton employees, who have accused her in interviews of taking her anger out on Michael, and possibly the branch. In a deleted scene from "The Convention" seen on NBC.com, she invites Stamford manager Josh Porter to a hotel room to review reports and have a quick drink shortly after Michael tells her that they cannot fall back into a relationship, hinting at either feelings for Josh or a desire to make Michael jealous.
She drives a late model Volvo S80 sedan.
Toby Flenderson
Toby Flenderson — played by Paul Lieberstein — HR Representative. A Bishop O'Hara High School alumnus, Toby drives a Saab 9-2x wagon, has a young daughter named Sasha who adores Michael, and went to Amsterdam for an undetermined amount of time after his divorce. Toby joins the others occasionally to conduct business, such as reviewing the company's sexual harassment policy and mediating conflict between employees. He prefers to let angry employees vent to him, eventually allowing the conflict to settle down and solve itself. Using the excuse that he was allergic to his desk, Toby moved locations to escape Kelly's constant talking. Toby is generally a friend of everyone around the office except Michael, who views Toby as his sworn enemy. As Michael observes, "Toby is in Human resources, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family." Michael also says "Toby Flenderson is everything that is wrong with the paper industry." Toby avoids office activities whenever possible and, like the rest of the staff, only tolerates Michael. After discovering Pam is dating again, Toby attempts several times to ask her out but never works up the courage.
Todd Packer
Todd F. Packer — played by David Koechner — Traveling Sales Manager. Todd is an obnoxious traveling sales representative who is good friends with Michael (who lists Packer as his emergency contact) and tells obscene, disrespectful jokes that offend everyone. Michael, however, isn't bothered by the jokes; instead, he refuses to stop Packer and joins in on the insults. Michael refers to Todd and himself as "BFF" (Best Friends Forever), and they have been friends for many years, ever since Michael's days as a sales rep in the Scranton branch before he was promoted. The two also share company gossip, highlighting one conversation involving a manager sleeping with his secretary, whom Packer refers to as "blonde incompetent". A dedicated prankster, Packer once deposited in Michael's office a highly odorous substance which was never revealed to viewers. Due to a DUI, Packer cannot drive his red Chevrolet Corvette convertible, which sports a Pennsylvania license plate reading "WLHUNG". While the meaning is obviously "well hung", in "Sexual Harrassment" Ryan asks Todd if he's a big fan of William Hung, to which Todd replies, "Why does everybody ask me that? Who the hell is that?" It is revealed in The Fight that Todd is Michael's emergency contact (mentioned as 'Todd F. Packer'). When Michael asks Ryan if he knows what the "F" stands for, Ryan replies "Fudge?". Todd Packer's counterpart in the UK version is Chris Finch.
David Wallace
David Wallace — played by Andy Buckley — Chief financial officer. First introduced in "Valentine's Day", Wallace replaced Randall, the former CFO who resigned for sexual harrassment. He attends a meeting with Jan, Michael, and Josh along with the two other regional managers: Craig from the Albany branch and Dan Gore from the Buffalo branch. After Craig reveals that Michael and Jan hooked up, Wallace does not punish the two after hearing Michael's explanation. When it is announced that the Scranton branch is closing, Michael and Dwight go to his house to get Wallace to change his mind. However, he is not home and the Scranton branch is later saved by reasons unrelated to their presence.
Brenda
Brenda — played by Brenda Withers. From Corporate, Brenda joins the Scranton crew on the Booze Cruise to supervise Michael and observe his presentation on company priorities. After breaking up with Katy, Jim makes a feeble attempt at asking Brenda out over the phone. It is speculated that she is Jim's date when he has to decline Abby's (Kevin's fiancee's daughter) dinner invitation. In a deleted scene from Drug Testing, Brenda calls the office, asking for Jim, but since he is under Pam's jinx, he does not answer.
Former Dunder Mifflin Employees
Josh Porter
Josh Porter — played by Charles Esten — Stamford Regional Manager. Introduced in the "Valentine's Day" episode, Porter was the Regional Manager of the Stamford branch before its closure.
A colleague of Michael's and seemingly a more responsible and competent boss, his presentation to the new CFO of Dunder Mifflin was professional in comparison to Michael's and was the only branch that was shown to have a growth in clients. Jim worked for him in Stamford and seemed to look up to him (taking after his practice of biking to work).
When it was announced that Dunder Mifflin Scranton would be closing, Josh was offered a promotion. However, he leveraged the offer to get a job with Staples, throwing plans for the Scranton closing into disarray. As a direct result of Josh's decision to leave Dunder Mifflin, it was decided to close the Stamford branch instead.
Josh's character is loosely based on Neil Godwin, the Swindon office branch manager in the Office UK series.
Ed Truck
Ed Truck — played by Ken Howard. Ed was regional manager at Scranton when Michael first started working at Dunder Mifflin. He also hired Creed and Phyllis. Apparently, Ed was not a fun boss and Michael vowed to not become him. In "The Carpet", Michael briefly meets with him; he tells Michael that he should have his employees be his employees instead of his friends. In "Grief Counseling", Michael learns of Ed's death when it's mentioned by Jan over the phone. Later, Creed reveals Ed's death in detail saying that he was decapitated after driving down Route 6 while intoxicated, and sliding his vehicle beneath an 18-wheeler. Overcome with grief, Michael proposes a realistic robotic statue of Ed complete with glowing eyes and mobile arms.
Devon
Devon — played by Devon Abner — former office worker. An office employee who sat across from Creed (who is directly responsible for getting Devon fired, to save his own job). Devon was reluctantly laid off by Michael on Halloween, and took it badly. In a bid to salvage their "friendship", Michael offered Devon free Chili's gift certificates which Devon ripped up in Michael's face. While storming out, Devon invited "Kevin, Jim, Pam, Kelly, Toby, Oscar, Meredith, Phyllis, Stanley, and the temp," to drinks, leaving out Angela, Dwight, Michael, and Creed. This implies he was never friendly with Angela and Dwight. Devon then smashes a pumpkin on Michael's car in sad retaliation. The episode marks his only dialogue in front of the camera. When Michael later receives a $3,000 Christmas bonus due to Dunder-Mifflin saving money through downsizing, he considers calling Devon to thank him, saying "some good came of it."
He was also warned by Dwight in The Dundies to keep his speech short. On the first season DVD, a deleted scene from the episode Diversity Day shows Devon with a "West Nile" sign on his forehead, as he escapes the seminar for a smoke. On the second season DVD, a deleted scene from the episode Valentine's Day shows Michael walking down the street in New York City, only to have a pedestrian begin to chase after him, yelling at Michael as he chases him. In the following scene, Michael reveals that it was Devon chasing him.
Tony Gardner
Tony Gardner — played by Mike Bruner. Tony was a worker at the Stamford branch, and is one of the employees that was transferred to Scranton. His first appearance is in the Diwali episode, when his chips get stuck in a vending machine, and Karen helps him get them out. Dwight, before even meeting Tony, tries to convince Michael to fire him on his first day in order to scare the new employees straight. On Tony's first day, he can hardly take Michael's antics (sitting through a painful orientation video made by Michael), but he hits his breaking point when Michael and Dwight tried to lift his large frame onto a table for an orientation demonstration. Humiliated and angry, Tony quits, admitting that he was not completely sure about transferring to begin with, but mostly blaming Michael's management style. An insulted Michael fires Tony instead, resulting in Dunder Mifflin having to pay him severance.
Martin Nash
Martin Nash — played by Wayne Wilderson. — Finance. Martin Nash worked at the Stamford branch, and was one of the employees transferred to Scranton. Before working at Dunder Mifflin, he served time in prison after getting busted for insider trading (which Kevin says is strangely similar to what he does). However, since he was put in a minimum-security facility, Martin claims his time in prison was just really boring. When he was released, he was hired by Josh through a federal reformed convict employment program, which allows Dunder Mifflin to receive rebate checks. Michael made a bad first impression on Martin, when he told the African-American employee, "I will show you where all the slaves work." He attempted to befriend Stanley, but failed. In "The Convict", when Martin's past is revealed to the office, Michael overly stresses his trust in Martin to everyone, worried that people would see him as a racist for looking at him as an ex-convict. However, since Martin's tales from prison were generally positive, everyone actually envies his experience compared to their jobs, frustrating Michael. Martin is the second employee from the Stamford branch to leave, due to Michael's management style, particularly after Michael makes his prison sentence the focal point of one of his seminars.
Miles
Miles — Miles was an ex-employee of Dunder Mifflin until he eventually left to begin his own company. He was mentioned in "The Carpet" episode.
Tom
Tom — Accountant. Tom was an accountant in Dunder Mifflin who suffered from depression and suggested that the company reach out more to depressed employees. However, since Michael never read the suggestion box, Tom slid deeper into depression and eventually shot himself. Michael completely forgot that Tom even existed, but when he is reminded and told of his suicide, he just comments that Tom was weird and moves on.
Other
Carol Stills
Carol Stills — played by Nancy Walls (wife of actor Steve Carell). Carol is Michael's real estate agent. She has two children. Michael entertained her kids at an ice-skating rink and she was Michael's date to the casino night. In a deleted scene, it is revealed that since Casino Night, Michael has been seeing her over the three months in between the second and third seasons . Carol rejected Michael's marriage proposal after they had been on nine dates. After Michael sent out an inappropriate Christmas card of them (which was actually a family photo with Michael's face superimposed over Carol's ex-husband), she rejects his Christmas gift of two tickets to Jamaica and breaks up with him. She drives an early-model Honda CR-V.
Bob Vance
Bob Vance — played by Robert R. Shafer. Phyllis Lapin's fiancé and owner of Vance Refrigeration, a neighboring tenant in the office park. He always introduces himself as "Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration". On Valentine's Day, he sent a number of gifts to Phyllis at the office, each card signed with his tagline. He also supplied a mini-fridge as a "Casino Night" prize and once called Stanley and Michael "a pair of Marys" in frustration. He is a friendly and helpful neighbor to Dunder-Mifflin, including offering to pump the employees' car tires back full of air after Michael had flattened them in an attempt to create office cameraderie. When word got out that the Scranton branch was shutting down, Bob offered to buy the Dunder-Mifflin warehouse, therefore allowing all the workers there to keep their jobs. He drives a GMC Yukon.
Katy
Katy — played by Amy Adams — attractive hand-bag saleswoman that stops by the office. Dwight considers her to be his ideal woman. Both Michael and Dwight make a move on her: Michael by flirting aggressively and Dwight by showing interest in purchasing a handbag. However, she ignores their advances and later dates Jim for a short time. She and Jim break up in the "Booze Cruise" episode. She is a graduate of Bishop O'Hara High School, where she was a cheerleader. She drives a Volkswagen Jetta.
Billy Merchant
Billy Merchant — played by Marcus A. York, property manager of the office park in which Dunder-Mifflin Scranton's office is located. Billy has used a wheelchair since the age of four. He is invited to the office to speak about being disabled after Michael burns his foot in a George Foreman grill. Billy attends Casino Night with his girlfriend, a Chili's waitress, whom Michael mistakes for his nurse. This is just one of many offensive assumptions Michael makes of Billy, which he says directly to him. Billy also shares his last name with original series co-creator Stephen Merchant.
Hank Tate
Hank Tate — Tate is the gruff security guard featured in the last five minutes of "Drug Testing". He inducts Dwight as the official head of security for the branch, and Dwight responds by saying "I've always felt that the security here sucked". He tells Dwight that he will not be able to use a gun nor a bo staff in his new position. To Dwight's dismay, he only owns two orange traffic cones and does not carry a gun. He was also in a deleted scene of "Halloween".
Mose Schrute
Mose Schrute — played by writer Michael Schur. Dwight's cousin and best friend. A resident of the Schrute beet farm, he and Dwight used to make a living off of selling beets. In the "Initiation", Dwight takes Ryan to the farm to test him before his first sales call. He is first seen darting quickly through the barn, although Ryan is immediately able to guess who it is (despite never meeting him before). As Ryan's final "test", he had to wrestle Mose, prompting Ryan to storm out of barn, with Mose commenting that he "seemed nice." Mose is also an amateur whittler; the object that he proferred to Ryan to apologize for his participation in Dwight's hazing incident is in fact a very well executed replica of a famous 22–24,000-year-old figurine from Austria known as "The Venus of Willendorf." It is also mentioned in a deleted scene of the second season DVD that Mose has never left the beet farm.
Stacy
Stacy — played by Trish Gates. Stacy is Kevin's fiancée. She has a daughter named Abby, whom Kevin brought to the office during "Take Your Daughter To Work Day". In a deleted scene in the "Valentine's Day" episode, it is revealed that Stacy often leaves town unexpectedly and rarely tells Kevin when she is coming back, hinting that their relationship is not so great.
