Nina was second-in-command of the Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) during the first season of the show, behind Jack Bauer, who was her former love interest. She was also involved with Tony Almeida, who later became Director of CTU. At the end of the first season, it was revealed that Nina was a traitor, who had been aiding the assassination attempts on (then Senator, later President) David Palmer. After her cover was blown, Nina attempted to run from CTU, but Jack's wife Teri overheard a conversation that would have compromised her escape, so Nina killed Teri. Nina was later captured and sent to prison.
In the second series, it was discovered that Nina had information on a terrorist organisation that was planning to detonate a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles, and President Palmer agreed to release her from prison if she helped CTU locate it.
In the third series, Jack encountered Nina again in Mexico while both were attempting to buy a deadly biological weapon (although for different reasons). Jack eventually ended up killing Nina when she threatened to kill his daughter Kim.
Little is known about Nina's history or motives. However she is multilingual: aside from English, she is seen speaking Serbian, German and Arabic, and it is quite possible she speaks even more languages than that.
