On a number of occasions now I've noticed you've made a whole series of benificial but tedious improvements to various currency articles. These are mostly the type of improvements that are behind the scene's (formatting, wikifying, etc.) and thus might go unrecognized, so I wanted to take a moment to thank you and let you know it's appreciated. Just wanted to say a massive thanks for your work on the Election results template. Not only is it a big help for getting some consistency in presentation, but the automatic totalling and percentage calculation has helped identify several errors in the tables (both from editors mistranscribing numbers from sources, and mistakes in the sources themselves) by comparing the automatically-calculated totals/percentages with those given in the original tables/sources. This will be a big help in maintaining accuracy! Number 57 22:32, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

Nomination for deletion of Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary

From my talk page back in september.

Bugger bugger bugger, I saw a map in the transport museum in budapest we went the other week and it had the lat and long but in pretty much a mercator projection. My missus was more interested with the toy trains so I didn't get a chance to take the measures off it. If it's wrong (as it is) it should be deleted but I am still trying to get the measures right. The thing is it's specifically Kingdom of Hungary, but the more atlases (atli? :) I look at the more different lats and longs I get. And anything one does on Hungarian articles is rather contentious, so it is probably really better deleted. Because people whose great grandfathers were part of the Kingdom of Hungary will say no that's Croatia or Slovakia or Slovenia or Yugoslavia or Jugoslavia or The People's Republic of East Kebab. Since Hungarian politics is very contentious and goes on racist grounds in far more than would be allowed in where I come from, this is better off deleted. (Hint: say Treaty of Trianon to a Hungarian and await results.) Si Trew (talk) 09:36, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Hungary ethic groups.jpg
I never did get round to this. I took the coords off of file at right, which is very high quality but seems to have an odd idea of where 0 longitude is (it suggests it is east of Paris, but that didn't seem to work). As you suggested, I tried to take well-known points at the edges of the map: Fiume, for example, at south-west. I took very good readings after printing out this map at A0 size and using ruler and compass, my trig is quite good, but I could never get it to fit. Si Trew (talk) 06:02, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
.Oh, Template:Location_map_Kingdom_of_Hungary/test might help you. You see, Fiume's in the right place but Budapest is a bit too far left and the rest are well out. Si Trew (talk) 06:09, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
That map uses the Paris meridian. It's not a Mercator projection, the lines of latitude aren't quite parallel. Maproom (talk) 20:09, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Maproom, thanks for the tip. I have written code for generating coefficients for nonlinear projections if I know the functional form. but, the code requires at least as many reference points as there are coefficients. basically a nonlinear least-squares algorithm. the problem here is that other than the reference markings on the side of the map, it's tough to get reference points in the middle. Frietjes (talk) 21:18, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Si Trew, should we just give up on Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary and have it deleted? Frietjes (talk) 21:20, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
How many do you need in the middle? You get get a reference point near each corner by specifying where the nearest line of (Paris) longitude would cross the nearest line of latitude, and use towns like Szolnok (which Google Earth says is 47°10'N 20°11'E Greenwich) in the middle. Maproom (talk) 21:37, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Maproom, now that I look at it again, I think we have enough with the two interior intersection points and the points along the edges. the original question was about the image in Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary which is less clear. for File:Hungary-ethnic_groups.jpg, I think we can make a working location map. thank you again. Frietjes (talk) 21:42, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Just a thought, maybe not very coherent at this time of night. Using an ethnographic map as a location map may, as Si Trew pointed out, be contentious. Will it help if instead I upload to Commons this map? It uses a Ferro meridian, which is no worse than Paris, and shows enough towns such as Szolnok for central reference points. Maproom (talk) 22:02, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Maproom, that may help. let's see what Si Trew says. my main focus is turning map images into working location maps. I don't really have a strong feeling about the particular map image, so long as it is created with a well-defined projection. Frietjes (talk) 22:06, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Just asking out of curiosity – how do you "turn a map image into a location map"? Do you warp it into the Mercator projection that the template requires? Or do you supply the template with a transform function? Maproom (talk) 07:24, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
Maproom, supply the transformation function. see, for example, module:Location map/data/Canada. if I know the functional form and a sufficient number of reference points, I can numerically solve for the coefficients. Frietjes (talk) 12:40, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
Thank you. It's reassuring to see that things are done in such a sensible and comprehensible way. Incidentally – if you ever find a map image at http://maproom.org/ that you could use in Misplaced Pages, please let me know and I'll put it on Commons. Maproom (talk) 09:46, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for pinging me in on this. I know it was a long time ago. User:Maproom, yes I did guess it was the Paris Meridian all that time ago, but that didn't seem quite to fit either. Since then I took something and with Inkscape made a four-colour map (five if you include Lake Balaton as a fifth colour, blue, but could have been made a fourth colour as those that surround it are all in three other colours, it is just more pleasant to have it in blue but not mathematically necessary) and split out all the layers and borders and so on into separate layers on the SVG. I seem to recall I called it Template:Location Map Hungary2 or something – and I emphasise this is not the Kingdom of Hungary but the modern-day Hungary. All I had left to do was get the text labelling right. Searching for "a new look for an old map" was something roughly want some commenter said, may well have been User:Frietjes here but may not have been (a long time ago, just going from memory: and those exact words are what was printed on the front of the first H C Beck fold-up London Underground Diagram (often called "Map"; Beck himself never called it a map: I have good references for this from publications of the London Transport Museum in woodware) of 1933, so I am probably confusing those words with the same sentiment expressed. This is all such a long time ago, I give as hints for those who can search better than I.
On the plus side, by pure coincidence (these are not common around here in Budapest) my local pub has a nice 1898ish German (I think) map of Austria-Hungary; certainly pre-Treaty of Trianon. This is a five or six colour map and I am pretty sure it is in German but I am going from memory, I don't think it's in Hungarian. It would be about 40 by 25 inches (1,020 mm × 640 mm) and I daresay somehow I could get it scanned in, in one of the largescale printers in the town (who I happen to be also on good terms with, for various other reasons) or just take four A3 scans and stitch them with photoshop, assuming that my scanner doesn't distort too much. I am on good terms with the landlord as I have given him my British registration plates and various other British pub memorablia, it is that kind of pub, very much a "local", so I can ask to borrow the map (it's framed) or just go in on a quiet afternoon with a straightedge etc and try to get some measures off that. I think it is not the same as the image is here, though quite similar. As a start shall I get the maker etc, would that help at all, before I do the trig etc off it? I have a very good straightedge and fifty quids worth of setsquare adjustable protractor that I use for technical drawing on my A0 drawing board, it's about 25 inches (640 mm) long on its hypotenuese, which should be enough to measure angles and distances with some kinda veracity, I am not sure of the projection without looking again. Is it worth me taking a look and reporting back, probably will be about UTC+2 Friday tomorrow, else Monday? If you give me some nice trig points "in the middle" I will do my best to give you the readings off of them. These won't be 100% accuracy but will be within a second of arc or two through the distortion of the glass in the frame, I would imagine. Si Trew (talk) 16:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
I understand if it is WP:COPYVIO etc but if I check the maker first, it may very well turn out not to be because of the date and also various other "things that have happened since", could well be PD or fair use. I think I check the maker first, that is clear enough in top right corner but don't remember offhand. Would that be of any use, at least to confirm or deny if it's the same as this one? It reminded me of this one, when I first saw it, but I think it is different but of about the same time. Si Trew (talk) 16:40, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
File:Hungary_location_map.svg is the one I made the four-colour svg version of. It just needs tidying on the text labels layer if I remember right, I can't remember its name. The computer it was on is long gone. File:Hungary location map2.svg? Something like that. We have File:Hungary location map-2.jpg on Commons, but that's not it, cos it's not four-colour and has labels in Cyrillic, is a jpg not an svg. Perhaps unfortunately it got deleted as unused. I'd need to ask an admin to dredge from about 2009 onwards. Users working on it would have been mostly me and perhaps occasionally the missus, no longer editing at Misplaced Pages for many a year due to very harsh and undeserved comments after excellent translations of English articles about the Tudors into HU:WP (something she is an expert in, more than I know and I'm bloody English): Her username was/is User:Monkap. Si Trew (talk) 16:51, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
OK, the map you included wrongfooted me, this is exactly the map that is nominated (duh!) I was looking at the map you included on the right. No, don't give up on it, I'll try to fix it. It is nearly OK, all the coords and borders and counties etc are done on separate labels and I think it is much better than the boring brown map transcluded via {{Infobox Hungarian settlement}}. We just need to fix the edges and fix the text-label layer for some reason the font doesn't scale properly, I never did work out why, I shall try again. One reason to separate into different layers in a good GIS fashion is so that with a flick of the wrist one can turn off all the labels, turn off e.g. the county borders, make all the counties brown and just fill one particular county in a different colour (for Hungarian county articles) etc etc etc. I hand-edited the XML for the SVG to make it all nice, it's much much nicer than its predecessor for putting into a GIS etc because each county edge and county border and county name etc is labeleed in a very consistent fashion. The underlying SVG is File:Kingdom_of_Hungary_counties-2.svg. The polygons for the borders go actually in a kinda "cogwheel" order so that some going anticlockwise have their boundaries against the others going clockwise, rather in a toothed gearwheel manner, but that was just my pedantry; each county actually has its own borders as it did on the original, but on the original the borders for e.g Budapest to Pest County were a bit different from the borders of Pest County to Budapest, i.e. there was a gap or overlap, which now there is not in "my" version, they have all the coordinates bang on, as I did them all in hand in the XML not with some "snap it roughly to where it looks right" tool. All the bordering points have the same coords but the opposite directions (clockwise or widdershins) which helps the SVG polygon fill get it right without overlap or gap.
I think we should keep it and try to fix the labels and the "fix" coordinates for it. I suppose this was a labour of love but I think it does make it better than what is used in the infobox, it scales except for the text labels and the old one has errors in the border coords that leave gaps or overlaps, it just doesn't seem so at the scale used in infoboxes, as the rendering of the borders and the pushpins for the places are far larger than the errors, at even a large-screen resolution scale. If you blow it up and print it onto A0 (paper size) is is noticeable. Si Trew (talk) 17:05, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
The text labels are fine on my I think 1972 across screen in full view. When I made this I think I had a 1024x768 screen. It's when the labels are all squished they don't scale down properly, and get all scrunched up, I have never quite worked out why. There is a style that governs it, and I tried all sorts of things but none worked. Si Trew (talk) 21:04, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Something I noticed

I was wondering how many tables are possibly not using one of the deprecated sport templates, but a manual header which acts the same, so I've used hastemplate:"Tooltip" insource:/Goals against/ and it found 5,090 results. Probably not all are relevant, but it sure seems there are much more here. It's really a shame a bot can't use your code to help you out here. --Gonnym (talk) 14:51, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

Module request

Hi again. Is there a module for the footballers' club statistics table like here? Can you help to built it?--Teacher0691 (talk) 21:39, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Teacher0691, I don't think there is. are those tables only used on the Turkish language WP? or, do you have an example of them in use on this WP? Frietjes (talk) 12:07, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

Module:Chessboard

hi Frietjes.

i noticed your edit summary on your latest edit to this module ("should use templatestyles").

i happen to be the originator of this module, though i haven't done much with it for the last several years, and i doubt it resemble my original version.

however, i did do quite a lot of other stuff related to showing chess on wikipedia (both lua and JS), and i wanted to suggest that there should be a better and simpler way to do what this module does - a lot of it has to do, as your summary indicates, with the introduction of templatestyles.

the "idea", or the "right way" to do it is demonstrated in mw:Module:ChessBowserPrototype (credit for showing me the light to User:Fred Gandt). this is a prototype for a (hopefully) up and coming extension meant to show full chess games interactively. you can see the demo-of-the-prototype-of-the-extension in mw:User:קיפודנחש/test.

this prototype contains, as a subset, everything module chessboard "done the right way" needs, and will show the chessboard even when JS is disabled, or the required JS module is not loaded (naturally, not the "interactive game" part). the extension will use php, but the prototype is mainly lua+css.

the templatestyle CSS is mw:Template:ChessBrowserProto/styles.css).

if you are interested, i'll be happy to discuss the details. the bottom line is that doing it this way leads to a significantly simpler module, and generates shorted, sweeter, cheaper and nicer html (e.g., no "img" elements so no ] and ]. as a free bonus, "reverse" (showing board from black POV) boils down to adding a single class to the wrapper div.

bottom line: following up on your comment will be significant improvement to the module, and to the html it squirts out. i will be very happy to discuss the details, help, or, if asked, even do some or most of the work. let me know if you's like to continue this discussion.

peace - קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 00:42, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

Hello kipod; although I am pleased to have helped a little in guiding your continued development of an interactive chess display done the right way, I really wish you'd have been more open to discussing the right way while my enthusiasm for the code was alive. I won't dwell on the "coulda, shoulda, woulda" of the past, but you've mentioned and directly messaged me about this several times since, and I feel it's about time I responded. Unfortunately I don't have anything useful to contribute beyond the scraps of code I wrote before, which are still available and free to use, abuse or ignore. My efforts to discuss how the implementation should be developed were dashed and the idea of getting involved again makes me feel bad. I hope something good eventually surfaces on Misplaced Pages, and wish you the best, but please stop pinging me about it (unless it's something specifically about the code I wrote and my input is needed). Thanks. Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 07:25, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
Hi Fred, thanks for linking me to those scraps of code. I didn't know there was a library to make gifs on the fly, but that's a really interesting option to consider for readers without javascript! Sorry that you've moved on, but your legacy is appreciated. Let me know if your feelings ever change. — Wug·a·po·des23:33, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

French wikipedia result table conversion

It is the possible to convert a Modèle:Foot résultat from French wikipedia to the Module:Sports results? Jolicnikola (talk) 03:29, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

Jolicnikola, we could (1) make a script that assists with the conversion, (2) make a module that assists with the conversion, (3) create a simplified input interface for Module:Sports results that allows for less verbose input (i.e., not have to say match_ match_ match_ and just split the entries with / or ;). Removal of infobox paramter

In this edit (and many other such edits), why is the area_magnitude parameter being removed from the infobox? I see nothing in Template:Infobox settlement that precludes its use nor can I see how the article is any better for its removal. Alansohn (talk) 04:19, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

what were you planning to put there? the area link in Philadelphia isn't very helpful. it would seem like a better idea for the infobox to determine the best link based on the passed value to avoid the need for users to guess about what to put there. but, back in 2013 they were all redirected to the same page, so there is really no need for a targeted link. Template:Infobox university rankings proposed overhaul

Hi A decision has been reached to merge Template:Infobox university rankings and Template:Infobox world university ranking under the title of the former. The initial code for the new and improved template is currently stored at Template:Infobox university rankings/sandbox. Are you in favor of this overhaul? Brilliantwiki2, I have been busy but will try to look later today. Frietjes (talk) 20:14, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
The new design is now live, and the articles that used the old tags have been updated. The articles using the 'world' template are now being migrated to it. Brilliantwiki2 (talk) 19:31, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Module Sports table

Hi, is there a way to suppress the PQR column? Or to create this option? Maybe something like "|show_PQR=no". This to create tables like e.g. Stand thuiswedstrijden for only the first/second half of the season, or for home/away matches. TIA --Sb008 (talk) 14:13, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

A question aside, are you Dutch? Your nic indicates so, "frietjes" is a Dutch word for "French fries". --Sb008 (talk) 14:17, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
Never mind, omitting the "text_XXX" parameters gives the desired result. --Sb008 (talk) 04:06, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
Sb008, yes that's the easiest way to remove that column. there may be another way, but I can't recall at the moment. and, yes, I am like frietjes, but I am not Dutch. I lived in Ghent back in the day, but have forgotten most of the Dutch that I learned. Frietjes (talk) 19:58, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Infobox golfer

The infobox at Connie Chen is very poorly formatted, with a lot of white space on the top. It looks like this is what this template does when the text for the labels in the awards section is long. I haven't looked at other articles, put there are probably more like this. Should that section have a different column alignment that the rest of the infobox? MB 17:29, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) {{Infobox golfer}} was forcing nowrap for all of its labels, which was a Bad Idea. I removed that formatting. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:29, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

AFL season ladder progressions

The new template implemented by you on multiple AFL season pages has one major issue. A typical ladder progression enables the user to sort the table by each round and display the teams in the order that they ranked after said round. Using your template, sorting the team in Round 1 for example, would not display the correct ladder for Round 1. After many attempts, I have not been able to find an easy solution to have the ladder progression both maintain correct ladder positions and be able to use something like "color_B" to highlight the cell. If you could find any way that would work, it would be greatly appreciated.

if so, I am not sure what problem you want to solve. the sort key provides the sorting order, and the shown value shows the number of points as of the particular round. if you want colouring, we could probably implement a separate coloring parameter to colour independently from the displayed value. please let me know so I can help.
also, the consensus at WP:TFD is to keep the WDL standings tables in the main season articles, and then transclude them in the team season articles. I have fixed the 1900 VFL season article for you. let me know if you would like me to fix the rest. thank you. 20:13, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

If the user sorts the table by the first round. Essendon, the team in first place, are sorted into fifth place. Furthermore, in my attempts to make the 1900 ladder progression, I was not able to colour the cells and be able sort. By implementing a separate colouring parameter, it would solve both problems. If there is anyway I could help with that, please let me know.

In regards to the WDL standings, I apologise for that, I believe I had only done that for the 1898–1900 seasons. I realised later when making the Geelong Football Club season articles it was super simple to transclude the table.

--RoryK8 (talk) 03:37, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

RoryK8, I am working on the separate colouring parameter, but I would like to fix an issue with "clobbered parameters" at the same time (right now the syntax allows for opp, pos, and res at the same time, but only one will appear). once this is all implemented, you will be able to say |res13= for the result and |resc13= for the colouring. I should have all this implemented in the next day or two. Frietjes (talk) 15:45, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Thank you. --RoryK8 (talk) 22:47, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
RoryK8, I have updated the code in my example above to demonstrate the syntax. basically, you use |resc13= for the colouring for |res13= or |posc13= for the colouring for |pos13=. if the |resc13= is omitted, or a value is blank, then it uses the default method for colouring. let me know if you see any problems. thank you. notes in Sports table, Sports results and Sports rbr table

Hi, if I compare the implemention of notes in Sports table, Sports results and Sports rbr table using simple strings as note values, I notice the following:

Using Sports table with |note_AAA=Team note and |hth_BBB=HTH note I get:

Pos Team Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Team B 26 15 7 4 54 25 +29 52
2 Team A 26 4 7 15 25 54 −29 19
Source: dummy
Notes:
  1. HTH note
  2. Team note

Using Sports results with |match_AAA_BBB_note=Match note I get:

Home \ Away AAA BBB
Team A 0–2
Team B 6–1
Source: dummy
Legend: Blue = home team win; Yellow = draw; Red = away team win.
Notes:
  1. Match note

Using Sports rbr table with |res1_rnd4_note=Res note and |pos2_rnd2_note=Pos note I get:

Description ╲ Round12345
ResultLDDLW
Position1710121417
  1. Res note
  2. Pos note
Source: dummy

Where I would expect something like:

Description ╲ Round12345
ResultLDDLW
Position1710121417
  1. Res note
  2. Pos note
Source: dummy

Is this as intended? If it needs to be changed, now it's still possible since, as far as I can see, there're only 30 pages (doc included) which use a rbr table with note parameters.

--Sb008 (talk) 11:38, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Sb008, I can't remember why they weren't wrapped in efn. if we need suffix parameter, we can always add that using different syntax. but, before I change it, I have added a tracking category to find any uses for inspection/changes. just need to wait for the tracking category to fill up and we can go from there. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 15:39, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
They all there (except for the nodule doc page), forced the category to fill. --Sb008 (talk) 16:31, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Used a script to request all pages which link to the module. --Sb008 (talk) 16:34, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Sb008, now updated, along with any articles using this parameter. thank you for noticing problem and suggesting this change. Frietjes (talk) 16:42, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Responsive columns

Hello Frietjes. An RfC recently closed at Template talk:Football squad player concluded that if possible, the squadlist (which currently displays two side-by-side lists created by inserting {{fs mid}}) should be turned into a list that displays in two side-by-side lists on wide screens and a single lists on narrow screens.

Someone has created a version in the sandbox that moves the right-hand table below the left one when a screen is narrowed, but it retains its separate heading and has whitespace between the two (there is also a sandbox version of fs mid ({{Football squad mid/sandbox}}).

Do you know whether it's possible to amend it so that the heading and whitespace disappear if the tables flip to being one below another rather than side-by-side? Cheers, Number 57

User:Number 57, the whitespace is easier to adjust than the heading itself. for the whitespace, you basically want an outer container that takes care of the top, bottom, and left margin. then you stick two left floating tables inside of that container which have zero margin on the top, bottom, and left, and a small margin on the right. I put examples in User:Frietjes/f. the first set uses the existing templates as a base, and the second set uses the sandbox as a base. I wasn't sure if you wanted the extra wikitable formatting and other features in the sandbox, or if you only wanted the minimal changes to get floating tables to work. Frietjes (talk) 14:11, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
Great work – thanks! In terms of the other features, the use of the country name (potentially via {{FIFA Country codes}}) and the heading colour being MediaWiki default were things that also need to be changed as a result of the RfC (it was decided against using gridlines – they are included in the main sandbox version as I think Tholme missed this conclusion of the discussion when they made their initial edits). Beatpoet, now fixed (missing a closing onlyinclude tag). thank you for reporting the problem! Frietjes (talk) 16:14, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
Sweet, I also just noticed that the table on 1918–19 Brentford F.C. season doesn't quite look the same as on previous London Combination seasons, the full table is shown, is that meant to be right? Don't know if it's meant to be different because Brentford finished as champions. Beatpoet (talk) 16:37, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
Beatpoet, yes, there is a |show_limit= in the main league season article which restricts the number of teams shown in the table when |showteam= is used. you can add a |show_limit= to the team season article with a larger number if you want to show more teams. but, the convention is to show a total of 5 teams, with 2 above and 2 below for the middle ranks, and 4 below for the champions. I really don't care either way, but for leagues with 20 or 30 teams it makes sense to only show an abbreviated table. Frietjes (talk) 16:40, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Forgetful

Hi. Can you remind me what happened as a result of long discussions and this RFC? Apologies. At the time, this seemed so very important to do by script, and now I would gladly update anything manually if only it existed. Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_National_Basketball_Association/Archive_36#RFC:_WNBA_rosters. -SusanLesch (talk) 16:13, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

SusanLesch, see User:Frietjes/w which compares the output from {{sports roster}} and the companion {{sports roster/entry}} with the output from the current system. the idea is that in the new system, the same code is used for both the roster and the footer, with the style controlled by an input parameter. the sample roster/footer is in User:Frietjes/ad. if you compare the results, it looks like the only things missing are (1) the Legend in the top tables, (2) the link to roster page, and (3) the link to other team templates in both. let me know if you see anything else that's missing. obviously the actual list of players/coaches/etc will not be the same because I stopped working on this almost a year ago and the live templates have changed since then. Frietjes (talk) 17:19, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
Yes, as far as I know only those 3 things are missing. Wow, it actually seems to work! This is really how all our rosters should be. Thank you, Frietjes! Tell me when you think it's live and I will try it. This year had a lot of team changes. -SusanLesch (talk) 18:51, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
SusanLesch, seems to be generally working now (see User:Frietjes/w). I created a separate WNBA styling submodule so this can be used for other leagues/sports. you can see the syntax in User:Frietjes/ad. the WNBA styling submodule adds the legend, roster link, and calls the various WNBA coloring templates based on the value in |team=. the |rosterteam= is for the link to roster, but may not be necessary since I believe this is always the last word in the team name in lowercase? let me know if you want me to make any more adjustments before I write up the documentation. Frietjes (talk) 21:17, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
Well, as of now the WNBA teams are all two words (a 1 or 2 word location plus a 1 word team name): Women's_National_Basketball_Association#Teams. Go for it. Thank you again. -SusanLesch (talk) 21:30, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
SusanLesch, now all converted. there should be no reason to update the "current roster" templates since they now get the contents from the "roster" templates. let me know if you see any problems. I will write some documentation soon, but probably not today. Frietjes (talk) 17:35, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
Amazing! Started with the champs, the Washington Mystics roster. Current roster was instantaneous. Even the rookies without positions and numbers found their place. I will be happy to get to them all unless the editor who did them last year does them first. Thank you! Would you like to announce this? Maybe after the documentation. I guess at Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject National Basketball Association and Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Basketball/Women's basketball. -SusanLesch (talk) 18:46, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
Quick question. Why on Template:Atlanta Dream roster does Elizabeth Williams become a "PT/F" when I entered "pos = C/F"? -SusanLesch (talk) 15:39, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
SusanLesch that was a mistake in replicating {{playerW}}. it should be fixed now. Frietjes (talk) 16:15, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
Do you have an opinion on using the nested {{Birth date and age}} template? Template:Chicago Sky roster has it for some reason. I would like to get rid of it. -SusanLesch (talk) 16:43, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
SusanLesch, yes, now removed. we could make the template/module do the DOB formatting automatically if this is desired. Frietjes (talk) 16:46, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you. So YYYY-MM-DD is the base format? I'm working on Connecticut which runs dates backwards (DD-MM-YYYY). Maybe I could make them all the same. -SusanLesch (talk) 16:56, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
SusanLesch, using YYYY-MM-DD is probably the safest. right now, the module automatically converts YYYY-MM-DD to MM-DD-YYYY (US style), but we can have it change YYYY-MM-DD to any format desired. of course, the problem with MM-DD-YYYY and DD-MM-YYYY is that unless the DD is greater than 12, you don't know which it is. whatever you want to do there is fine with me, just let me know if I need to fix something. Frietjes (talk) 17:01, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you. Everything appears to work perfectly. I am busy offline but will try to keep at these until they're done. -SusanLesch (talk) 17:25, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
Done. Is there a way to line up the columns when some fields are blank? I've seen it happen only in the first few players. For example, I had to add from: "Australia" to Rebecca Allen in Template:New York Liberty roster. -SusanLesch (talk) 02:54, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
SusanLesch, yes, that should be fixed now (now have the logic to add a blank cell in that case). Frietjes (talk) 18:21, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Question

I was just wondering if I or someone else could nominate you for adminship. You are such a helpful editor and have great technical skills, it would help make you even more productive! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:14, 20 May 2020 (UTC)

MSGJ, thanks for the offer, but I am pretty happy with the current arrangement. if there wasn't a "template editor" permission, I would definitely go for it. I generally find that my requests for an admin to do something for me is less than once per week, and it is generally good to have another person verify that what I am asking isn't crazy. Frietjes (talk) 20:06, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
Fair enough. Let me know if you ever change your mind! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:34, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

Module:sports rbr table: Is this correct code?

The code below is (partly) based on the parameter |date=. However such a parameter is not described in the documentation. However, what we do have, are the parameters |update= and |start_date=. Based on the documentation "args" will always be false, ergo a missing or empty source parameter will never be reported. Do we need a check on any date parameter anyway? Should a missing or empty source parameter not always be reported, independent of any date parameter?

	-- Require a source
if source == nil and args then
		source = frame:expandTemplate{ title = 'citation needed', args = { reason='No source parameter defined', date=date or os.date('%B %Y') } }
	elseif source and source:match('#') then
		if source:match('eason#') or source:match('%d%d#') then
			tracking = tracking .. ']'
		elseif source:match('^') then
			tracking = tracking .. ']'
		end
	end

--Sb008 (talk) 13:09, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Sb008, at the time the module was created, there were so many of them without sources that we would have ended up having {{citation needed}} on almost all of them. I wasn't entirely sure if we wanted to do this, so I basically disable the feature unless someone explicitly gave the date parameter. If you want to change it to always add the {{citation needed}} when there is no |source=, then that's fine with me. I really don't care either way. Frietjes (talk) 20:00, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
In my opinion there should indeed always be a |source= parameter, but who am I? I know in both {{#invoke:sports table}} and {{#invoke:sports results}} it's a requirement. Maybe something we should up for a vote? Using the |date= parameter seems odd to me no matter what. What's the purpose of this parameter? Just to act as a boolean to indicate whether the source check should be performed? It's not used in any other way and it's not documented. If a date parameter is used, |update= and |start_date= seem more logical to me. Maybe add a line "local date = args or args or args" as first non comment line in the code section posted above? - Sb008 (talk) 20:31, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
And to be clear, I'm not criticizing you, I think you do a marvelous job. -- Sb008 (talk) 20:35, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
Sb008, I changed it, we could call it |citation_needed_date=, but the intent was for marking when the {{citation needed}} was added. pages with the {{citation needed}} tag are sorted in subcategories of Category:Articles with unsourced statements. the idea is that you work through those subcategories in reverse chronological order, addressing the articles with the oldest unsourced statements first. however, by using |date= equal to os.date('%B %Y') you basically ensure that the article is always in the most recent subcategory. this is why there are bots that go around and add the |date= to the {{citation needed}} tags. by having the ability to set the value for the |date= parameter, you have the option for a bot to update this as it updates the other {{citation needed}} tags, but this isn't happening right now. 20:46, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
I understand your intention but, correct me if I'm wrong, there are 2 different |date= parameters, 1 for the module and 1 for the template. The bots only add the |date= parameter to the {{citation needed}} template when it's missing. They don't add this parameter to the module {{#invoke:sports table}}. On the other hand, the module only adds the template {{citation needed}} (including the |date= for the template, thus making the bots "unemployed") if the the |date= parameter for the module is present and the |source= is missing. So who or what is adding the |date= parameter for the module? Seems to me, to cause the {{citation needed}} template to be added in case of a missing |source= parameter can only occur if someone adds the |date= parameter for the module manually. Of course, this is based on the initial code as shown above. -- Sb008 (talk) 23:33, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
correct, the bots are unemployed because the module automatically dates the citation needed template with today's date. however, if someone doesn't like the fact that the articles are always in the newest subcategory, you can add |date= to freeze it in a particular category. I am not aware of any bots doing this right now, but it is possible to have a bot do it (like AnomieBOT does for other templates right now for templates in Misplaced Pages:AutoWikiBrowser/Dated templates). Frietjes (talk) 16:19, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
So in the initial code the citation template was never added unless someone would add the undocumented parameter date manually (and of course the source parameter was missing). -- Sb008 (talk) 17:17, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
yes, probably copied from {{fb rbr footer}} before it was deleted. Frietjes (talk) 17:20, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
Clear, and btw do you know a good online lua syntax manual? I know how to program, just don't know all the possibilities in lua. -- Sb008 (talk) 17:31, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
Sb008, I use the first link in Help:Lua#Documentation but the others may be good. beyond that, I have learned a lot from WT:Lua, which was especially useful when I was trying to figure out how Module:Arguments works without touching the arg key values, and why touching the arg key values can cause ghost references (or references appearing out of order). Damallsvenskan seasons article changes

What was going on and what did you do on 2015 Damallsvenskan? I do not recall that the older revisions were such a mess with the league table and broken (?) templates.

And why did you remove the {{Football in Sweden}} template on all articles?

Would be nice if you left a little edit summary ;) Thank you for your hard work. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 13:29, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for your reply! I see. I'm not very initiated in the inner workings and developments of Misplaced Pages's technicalities, but from what I can gather, in layman's terms, an old sports table system was replaced with a new one. And when the old templates were deleted, the table vanished from the article and left lots of dead code in it.
You, on the other hand, seem very initiated in the matter, and as you also touched on 2020 Damallsvenskan I will take the opportunity to explain myself. I tried to combine all elements of a WDL table into one, using sports rbr table (I don't know how to link to it or even find it anymore), but it clearly isn't designed for that, so I had to haxx it together. I thought we could try that and see what people think, and if people are positive, some(one) could write some proper code for it. I forgot to mention it in the edit summary.
Why did you change the "style" parameter on the standings table from football to WDL? Is that what it's called now? It's a standings table, not a WDL table, very unintuitive and confusing.
I have a large draft on another computer with lots of pre-season info going into the overview section. New dates have recently been set. It will start at the end of June, so I will try to get it up by then. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 23:50, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
Mango från yttre rymden, the style template is Module:Sports table/WDL where WDL = "win draw loss" since not all football seasons have draws. there is also Module:Sports table/WL for football seasons without draws. if there is a problem with Module:Sports rbr table, let me know and I can work on it, but so far it seems to be working for 99.9% of all football articles which have round-by-round results tables. Frietjes (talk) 22:32, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
I see now about the style parameter.
I was using this example https://en.wikipedia.org/Module:Sports_rbr_table#Example_3:_Team_combined_table but with all teams in the division in one single table, not just one team with the team name put in the table title like the example shows. The module clearly isn't really made for what I was doing in 2020 Damallsvenskan. It works, but I kinda had to duct tape it together with lots of label rows with a new number for each row, making it difficult to keep track of what value is for what team. Would be much easier if all values regarding one team had the same number. Like "Ground1" and "Position1" perhaps. Do you see what I'm going for? Could it be modified into what I would like to have it, or something like it? If you are a coder I'm sure you can come up with a good solution, but I'm not sure I have made myself apprehensible. The whole concept is quite ambitious from a user and article standpoint, but I thought it could be tried at least. Or do you think it's just stupid perhaps? --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 14:28, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
we were working on something related here, where one could put the position/ground/result in one table and then select which to show. here, it sounds like you want to have all three show at the same time for all teams? I had stopped working on it because I thought no one was seriously interested. but, I could work on it some more if you are interested. Frietjes (talk) 14:34, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
"here, it sounds like you want to have all three show at the same time for all teams?" Exactly. It's just an idea on my end, I don't know if there's any interest. I was thinking that I would do it on 2020 Damallsvenskan either way, as a proof on concept, and get peoples opinion, and if people liked it, it could be pitched to someone working on that stuff (like you? :) ) to implement functions for it in the module properly. I could start with your opinion. Since you've already thought about it and perhaps worked a little bit on it, then I guess I'm not the only one thinking along those lines ;) The thing you discussed in "Consistent data" looks really cool, but that is more about logistics, having one template on multiple articles and thus lessen editing burden, as I understood it. --Mango från yttre rymden (talk) 20:20, 26 June 2020 (UTC) I also edited my previous message to make it more clear.

Translating citations

Hi Frietjes. First of all, I wanted to thank you for that amazing tool. I use it regularly and it saves me a lot of time. However, I noticed that on this draft, some of the citations don't get translated, no matter how many times I use the tool on them. The situation is similar to my sandbox page, bu there you were able to easily do it. I was wondering if you could do the same thing again for the page that I mentioned above. Thanks. Keivan.f 07:12, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Keivan.f, it should be working a bit better now. basically, any time that you encounter something that isn't translated (or is translated incorrectly), please let me know and I will expand or adjust the script. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 17:36, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

Clemton Park, New South Wales

In the previous version of this article the photo is in an unusual position in the bottom left hand corner of the article. It took me a while to figure out that it was caused by the insertion of {{mapbox raw data|data= {{City of Canterbury-Bankstown suburb map|suburb=yes}} |text=Clemton Park within the City of Canterbury-Bankstown}} by another editor some time ago which seems to push any photos included after its own inclusion to a position below the infobox. I corrected it by . As there are a number of articles which have this problem, I wonder if there is any way this template can be changed so that it does not cause this problem? Thank You Fleet Lists (talk) 12:19, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

Fleet Lists, unfortunately, there is no simple automatic solution. the top of any right floating element will push the top of any subsequent left floating element to come after it. the general solution has been to re-order the floating elements any time that you see this. another solution is to use {{stack}} which will nest right floating elements when space allows it. you can also use stack to group right floating elements, but those elements must have the same width. the documentation for Template:Stack has several examples showing the problem and how {{stack}} can be used to solve those problems. but, the best method for simple situations is to just alternate right-left-right-left elements floating on the page, or make sure that there are no left floating elements that come after a sequence of right floating elements. for pages with lots of images, you also want to be aware of MOS:SANDWICH which happens when you put a right and left next to each other and the text is sandwiched in the middle. if there isn't a WP page about "float management" there should be (covering stacking, sandwiching, etc. all in one guide). Hi - why do you not want to include a link to the current Benevento season in the infobox on the club's article? This is standard for a professional football club. Thanks. Rupert1904 (talk) 18:21, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

Rupert1904, the page was in Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls which means it had the same parameter listed twice. if you want to change the value of |season= you should change the existing value, not add a duplicate value. Frietjes (talk) 19:05, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

Template:Infobox legislative election

Hello Frietjes. I've added another four possible rows to this template (31-35), but for some reason they don't seem to appear when used (e.g. 1990 Brazilian legislative election). Hi User:Number 57! It looks like Template:Alternating rows table section only supports 30 rows. Someone could extend it to more than 30, but even better would be if someone could rewrite it in LUA for efficiency. Someone like Frietjes? :) Cheers! Plastikspork ―Œ 13:54, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Module:Sports color for national football team templates

Hello, I noticed that Module:Sports color is used for certain sports such as basketball, could this be expanded to (international) football as well? For example, there are thousands of templates which use Template:National squad and Template:National squad no numbers, could this be adapted so the colours for each country could be consistent across all the templates? I'm not exactly certain how to implement this, but I can create the list of colour values wherever necessary. S.A. Julio (talk) 19:57, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

S.A. Julio, yes, you just have to create Module:Sports color/international_football or Module:Sports color/association_football (or whatever you want to call it). the submodule name doesn't need to be short since we will call it through a helper template. you can see the format in the various colour modules: here. it looks like people have already created them for more sports than I had anticipated. the typical format is "background 1", "foreground 1", "background 2", "foreground 2", but we could have "background 1", "border 1", "background 2", "border 2" with the font color automatically set to black/white based on contrast. Frietjes (talk) 20:07, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
@Frietjes: Alright, would it be possible to just have "background", "foreground" and "border"? Some templates use font colors other than black/white, such as Template:England squad 2018 FIFA World Cup. (What are the alternate colors typically used for?) S.A. Julio (talk) 20:57, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
S.A. Julio, yes, in fact that's what you get from the standard "colorcell" function with the appropriate value for |border=. if the border is white, it will ignore the border (see the bottom of Module:Sports color where it has "1, 2, 3"). the "colorcell2" function uses "3, 4, 1" for background, foreground, border. some sports use "colorcell" for the title, above, below and "colorcell2" for group in navboxes. 1993 Football League First Division play-off Final

Thanks for your edit there, but please could you tell me how to bold the two clubs who made it to the final and add the key, both of which appear to have gone missing? Also, these days we add "captions" to tables instead of a trailing "source:" so please could you fix that too. If not, I'll just go back to the hand-crafted table which worked just fine. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 21:29, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

The Rambling Man, I have bolded the two teams, but they can also be shaded as in 1992–93 Football League#First Division. the key defined through the {{abbr}} in the header (hover over the W, D, L, etc.). the source has been moved to the title as it was before. let me know if you see any problems. Frietjes (talk) 17:00, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Looks good. Can you confirm that the "module" also complies with MOS:ACCESS i.e. has both row and col scopes please? And that the row scopes are the club names? Cheers! The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 18:25, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
P.S. Once we've got this nailed, there are a few other articles on which you can work some similar magic....!! The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 18:25, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
The Rambling Man, yes, Special:ExpandTemplates shows scopes on both rows and columns. the row scopes are on the positions, but that could be easily changed (possibly after some discussion at Module talk:Sports table). Frietjes (talk) 18:29, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Row scope needs to be club names. And the numbers need to be numerically aligned, i.e. not centrally aligned. Once that's done, I'll accept the edits! Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 18:33, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
The Rambling Man, row scopes are now on the teams. do you just want the gap between the + and the 7, or do you want all the numbers left aligned. if it's just the gap, it shouldn't be that hard. however, left aligning all the numbers will probably cause a revolt at WT:FOOTY. I will start a thread there. Frietjes (talk) 18:39, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
No, aligned to the right, as I had them in the hand-crafted table, so the units align and the tens align etc. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 18:56, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi, there is a discussion regarding {{Football squad player}} (you can skip to Template talk:Football squad player#Accessibility). We would appreciate it if you could give us a hand! Thanks, Nehme1499 (talk) 11:31, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

Nehme1499, I am probably just dense, but I don't really understand what the goal is here. I see that there is some desire to replace player2 with player, but what does player need to do for this to happen? Frietjes (talk) 17:40, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
I think the idea is that we would like player to show two tables side by side on desktop version (fs mid is used as a "divider"), and to show one single table on mobile view. They say that we would need to deal with "modules". I'll ping the users involved, maybe they can explain better. @Struway2, Walter Görlitz, Number 57, Govvy, and Tholme. Nehme1499 (talk) 10:21, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Trying to summarise: The outcome of the RfC was to have a squadlist that appears in two columns on wide screens or a single column on narrow screens. The current squadlist always appears in two columns. I managed to create a rudimentary one here by combining div col with the squadlist tables. There are two improvements needed for this: (1) to stop the columns being so far apart on wide screens, and (2) to remove the second heading when it compresses to a single column. I am not sure it is possible to resolve these issues using templates, so I was wondering whether modules had the functionality to be able to do so. Number 57 10:27, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Module:Location_map

Hey there. I noticed you created the Aberdeenshire map module and was wondering if you'd be able to do the same for Peterhead. I recently created sixteen of the articles now in Category:Buildings and structures in Peterhead, so it would be nice to see a more refined map, to make use of the infobox data therein, rather than just the one for the entire council area. No worries if not; it does look like a bit of a pain to do. - Seasider53 (talk) 23:51, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

Seasider53, many building and structure infoboxes support |mapframe=yes to enable a street map. these are typically off by default if there is already a static map image or a location map in the infobox. the zoom is controlled by |mapframe-zoom=13 with 13 being the default. I find these are useful in visually inspecting the sanity of the coordinates in the infobox. I have added this to many of the articles in the category you listed. Frietjes (talk) 13:32, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for that. As an aside, how true is this comment? - Seasider53 (talk) 16:33, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
Seasider53, some people like multiplr maps and some don't, so you will encounter push back on occasion. there has been some discussion about integrating the mapframe map into the pushpin map set with a toggle selector (i.e., another option in the toggle selector you see in King's Inch). but, as far as I can tell, that hasn't happened yet. that would probably satisfy the people who only want one map. by the way, on that particular article, you could always use the mapframe instead of the pushpin map, but it could be that the editor in question prefers the location map to the mapframe map. Frietjes (talk) 16:40, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
Yep, I think integration would be beneficial to the majority of people. I'm actually torn between the two maps: the "static" map tends to not provide enough accuracy at-a-glance, while the pin on the mapframe is way too large for its purpose. - Seasider53 (talk) 17:35, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

Template: NBA color cell

Hi Frietjes - I've recently raised a question at Template talk:NBA color cell#NBA colours, but i don't know if anyone's monitoring that page. Can you help? Colonies Chris (talk) 20:36, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

thumbfix

Due to a recent image-adding contest, there are a lot of thumbnails to fix in {{Automatic taxobox}}. Could you update thumbfix to support this one (it uses |image= and |image_caption=. Another general update would be to support the "centre" spelling of "center". Thanks. This tool have been very useful. MB 23:48, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

User:MB, okay, both changes might work now (didn't test it). Frietjes (talk) 14:14, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Why this sandbox you didn't put on a watchlist, please? That page can help you to can convert a result tables and league tables. Jolicnikola (talk) 02:06, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Jolicnikola, I don't use a watchlist. if you a link to my userpage in your edit summary, I will be notified. by the way, there were many duplicate labels like "Loko" which could mean more than one team. the script fixes these by appending the position number to the second occurrence. you can probably fix them with a "search and replace", or I can try to do it if you don't know how to do that. Hi Frietjes. When Vgrelease is used without a region, it populates a maintenance category for correction. I see you're cleaning up bad country data transclusions. New infobox - Law enforcement unit

Hi Frietjes, I think I read once someone describe you as a template coding guru or similar. Can you please check the code for Template:Infobox law enforcement unit before I start using it. I have had the design (not code) peer reviewed as much as I can. I'm not sure why the title of the infobox appears on the right hand side above template documentation on Template:Infobox law enforcement unit (I think it might be something in the doc?). I've created the documentation subpage (except TemplateData), created a sandbox and created test cases. I'm not sure what else I need to start using it? I think create category for unknown parameters check, add it to the list of infoboxes and have it page semi-protected for only autoconfirmed users. thanks --Melbguy05 (talk) 06:20, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I think you may encounter editors who think that it is redundant to {{Infobox law enforcement agency}}. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:59, 25 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jonesey95: {{Infobox law enforcement agency}} is for a law enforcement agency similar to {{Infobox national military}} is for a country's military and armed forces. While {{Infobox law enforcement unit}} is for units of the law enforcement agency similar to {{Infobox military unit}} is for units of the country's military and armed forces. One example of the use the new infobox is for FBI units. {{Federal Bureau of Investigation}} is used on most of the articles on FBI units - FBI Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch, FBI Critical Incident Response Group, etc.. - using {{Infobox law enforcement unit}} those articles can have their own infobox summarizing that unit.--Melbguy05 (talk) 08:32, 25 July 2020 (UTC)
You may be able to head off questions by putting an explanation like that into the documentation for the new template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:16, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

Infobox company

I ran across this version of an article (since fixed) that displayed the same value twice in the address because it used both |location_city= and |location=. But it wasn't caught and put in Category:Pages using infobox company with ignored parameters. I thought you were catching all of these kinds of conflicts? Or maybe I am remembering a different template that has more extensive conflict checking. MB 03:08, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

User:MB, the category only tracks cases where information is being ignored due to a conflict with another parameter. if the information appears, then it wasn't being ignored, so it doesn't appear in the ignored parameters category. we could probably add tracking for cases where the exact same information appears twice (i.e., location = location_city), but catching all possible repetitions would be difficult (e.g., location_city is a subset of the information in location). Template:Earthquake magnitude/doc

Hi Frietjes, in your edit to Template:Earthquake magnitude/doc, you replaced the shortcut {{M}} with the full {{Earthquake magnitude}} throughout. As the full template name is not used in any articles that I'm aware of, as the shortcut has been in existence for a lot longer, I'm not sure that replacing it in the documentation is going to help anybody. I may well be missing something here, I often am, but I was just wondering about the rationale. Mikenorton (talk) 18:13, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Mikenorton, sorry, was cleaning up Template:M. which comes from ru:Template:M. (why one letter templates are a bad idea). Frietjes (talk) 18:15, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Module:Sports color for National Hockey League (NHL) team colors

Hello, Frietjes (talk), I don't know if you are aware of this or not, but apparently, there was a discussion regarding WP:TfD from 2008 regarding Template:NHLPrimaryColor (that discussion is found here). Do you think it would be possible to restore all the team color templates for all 32 National Hockey League (NHL) teams to Module:Sports color, or is the established consensus at WP:NHL to leave all NHL-related team templates with a white background, with the specific team's colors used as border colors in the |titlestyle= & |basestyle=? What's the best way for me to go about trying to persuade other editors to restore wiki-code formatting for all 32 NHL teams at Module:Sports color? Charlesaaronthompson (talk) 02:57, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Charlesaaronthompson, I have created Template:Navbox NHL, which seems to work for Template:Anaheim Ducks/sandbox. If this is what you are looking for, I would suggest showing editors Template:Anaheim Ducks/sandbox compared to Template:Anaheim Ducks, noting that the styling is set by |teamname= with no need to provide four different style statements. you can also note that the colors in Module:Sports color/ice hockey could be used by other NHL templates like {{Infobox NHL team}} which would eliminate the need for the coloring statements in those templates as well. of course, if there is no consensus for any of this, I am happy to have the newly created templates/modules deleted. Frietjes (talk) 15:41, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
@Frietjes: Thank you for creating Module:Sports color/ice hockey. That's part of what I was looking for. I was hoping to created colored backgrounds for all 32 NHL team templates, similar to Module:Gridiron color/data, Module:Sports color/baseball & Module:Sports color/basketball. In order to use Module:Sports color/ice hockey, we would need to create templates that would allow us to use the appropriate wiki-code formatting, similar to Template:Gridiron primary style, Template:Baseball primary style & Template:NBA color cell. Where would I need to comment in order to gain WP:CONSENSUS with other editors at WP:NHL to create the templates needed to use Module:Sports color/ice hockey? Charlesaaronthompson (talk) 18:45, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
@Charlesaaronthompson:, I would think that Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Ice Hockey would be the place to start a discussion. Frietjes (talk) 18:49, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Make findargdups select what it found in the edit box

In Special:Diff/971609182/971612429, I added a feature to my fork of findargdups to try to select what it found in the edit box. I need help updating the wiki-code formatting at Template:NBA roster header

Hello again, Frietjes (talk), I was wondering if you could please help me? I'm trying to insert |border=s into the wiki-code formatting over at Template:NBA roster header. However, I've run into a snag. I'm trying to split the second-level headers between the "players" header & the "coaches" header, and I just can't quite seem to figure out how to format it so that there's a break between the two headers, with both of them having a |border= surrounding them. Template:Football squad player

Hi. Following this 6-month old discussion which resulted in a consensus to merge Template:Football squad player and Template:Football squad player2, we made a redesign RfC to decide HOW the resulting template should look (which ended over 3 months ago). Now, we have implemented some changes to Football squad player (which are now live). However, there are a couple of issues:

  1. One of the results of the RfC was that it would be ideal to show two columns on the PC version, and a single column on mobile version (this is how is should look like on PC, and this is how is should look like on mobile)
  2. It seems that Fs player2 doesn't use a "Fs player2 start", "mid", or "end", rather a wikitable, which complicates things (see this, for example)
  3. Finally there is Template:Fs player2 sort. If we redirected fs start and end2 to the main ones, the table would work, but the headings would be out of order (e.g. the nationality of the players appears in the last column). {{fs player}} needs to be reworked to able to accept both the normal input and the parameters used in {{Fs player2 sort}}.

Do you think these issues can be solved? Thanks, Nehme1499 (talk) 13:12, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

I'm pinging @Number 57 as we were also discussing these issues. Nehme1499 (talk) 13:13, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
To correct the above, fs player2 does use {{fs start2}} and {{fs end2}}. I think what Nehme meant is that on many articles, editors have instead used Wikitables to start and end the lists rather than the template versions. Number 57 18:02, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
@Nehme1499 and Number 57: unfortunately, you can't explicitly get the width of the browser window without using javascript, and at the moment there is no way to use javascript on WP without modifying the site-wide javascript which requires an extremely strong case. however, there are certain classes that are "display:none" on mobile (see MediaWiki:Mobile.css) and you can abuse those classes to hide things. for example, compare the desktop and mobile versions of User:Frietjes/noprint. this is a hack. if you want to check with a mobile view expert, I would suggest contacting Great Brightstar who probably knows a less hacked way of hiding the second header rows on mobile. you could also check with css experts at MediaWiki talk:Common.css or WP:VPT to see if someone there has a better idea. of course, if editors don't use the templates for the outer tables then you can't really style the outer tables. Edge case missed by findargdups

I found an edge case where a page contains duplicate arguments but findargdups can't find them. I created a minimal test case at . It's admittedly rather pathological, since it depends on two separate mistakes, but I did first see it in the wild. Jackmcbarn (talk) 21:11, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Jackmcbarn, thanks, the script doesn't fully understand how WP parses ref tags with unclosed braces and unclosed brackets. if I had some javascript that could convert a page into a nested parsing tree it would be much easier to isolate the offending parameters. I will see if I can do something here, but I am not sure if there is a simple solution. Frietjes (talk) 15:49, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
I wonder if feeding the page to Parsoid like WP:EPH does would help. It basically gives you the nested parsing tree, where the tree is a DOM tree. Jackmcbarn (talk) 21:40, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Template:Election results/Module:Election results

Hello. I was wondering if there was any chance you could look at whether the upgrades requested to this module at Template talk:Election results are possible? I have tried messing around in the sandbox, but it's all been very trial and error as I don't know Lua and am now stuck (see the current version of the testcases) and a request for assistance at Misplaced Pages talk:Lua went nowhere... I think some of it should be fairly simple for someone who knows their way around the code (particularly manually adding a colour and possbily even the switch to simple parliamentary elections, which I seem to have got at least half way on... If you don't have time, is there anywhere/anyone else you could recommend asking for help? Having a universal results table would be a massive benefit as at the moment virtually all of them are Wikitables, which are prone to being repeatedly changed by drive-by editors and trying to maintain some form of consistency is incredibly draining. Cheers, Number 57 21:13, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

Number 57, sure I can help. I just implemented the first thing that you requested (i.e., |color1= or |colour1= and an ifexist check before transcluding the meta/color template). some of the requests are entirely clear to me, but we can continue the conversation on the talk page for the template. Frietjes (talk) 21:55, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
Hello. Do you have any idea why this causes the template/module to fall over? Oddly it doesn't seem to happen if the party with the disambiguated name is listed first. Cheers, Number 57 19:59, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
I've been messing about with it a bit more and strangely it works fine if the link is not piped, but any kind of piping (not just parenthical) in a second link causes it to fail. It also works fine if the third link is piped, so it seems it's specifically the use of piping in a second link that makes it fail. Number 57 21:14, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
@Number 57:, I think this fixes the problem. Before, it was probably grabbing everything between the first ], which is strange since a non-greedy match was used. This change forces it to (1) use the first wikilink and (2) not have any as well, but this seems to work. I hope this helps (talk page stalker) Plastikspork ―Œ 13:12, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Template:TFNSW platforms/line

As you are aware I am in the process of converting the New South Wales line templates to Template:Adjacent stations. I thought I had most problems solved but then I happened to find this template which you did some work on some years ago and which contains a number of color entries at the beginning, like #{{Sydney Trains color|Airport and East Hills}} which do not appear to have matching entries in Template:Sydney Trains color. I suspect that none of these entries are now used. Is there any way that we can confirm this before we delete them, as Sydney Trains color is one of the templates due to be deleted when the conversion is complete?Fleet Lists (talk) 08:23, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

Just a thought. As the default in Template:Sydney Trains color goes to Template:CityRail color/null any unsupported calls should already be trapped there. Is that correct? If so I think it would be safe to delete the entries from the Platform/Line template. Fleet Lists (talk) 11:22, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
Fleet Lists, yes, anything not matched in #switch goes there, so if you use whatlinkshere for that template you get any pages using values not supported by the #switch. right now the only pages transcluding the null page are talk pages and user pages. Frietjes (talk) 14:16, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

Help

Hi Frietjes! Long time no speak - hope that you're well wherever you are. I have been tinkering in my sandbox with a view to improving {{Old peer review}} and have encountered two problems I want to ask your help with:

  1. How to put spaces into conditional phrases (eg I want to sometimes put the word " (version)" but I can only get it to substitute the word "(version)" without the space
  2. If there is a way to, based on a substituted template in the talk namespace, insert the current revision ID of the corresponding article so that it can be linked to.

Link is here: User:Tom (LT)/sandbox/Old peer review; examples of use are here User:Tom (LT)/sandbox/PR close examples. Thank you again! --Tom (LT) (talk) 06:01, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

there are two common ways to get the space, (a) use &#32; which works but doesn't look so nice when it is substituted, (b) Misplaced Pages renders two spaces the same as one space, so you could change '''{{PAGENAME}}'''{{#if:{{{ID|}}}|| (])}} received to '''{{PAGENAME}}''' {{#if:{{{ID|}}}||(])}} received (c) move text into both parts of the parser function, which is code duplication, but looks nicer when substituted, so change to {{#if:{{{ID|}}}|'''{{PAGENAME}}'''|'''{{PAGENAME}}''' (])}} received note that in all cases, if you are going to substitute this, you will want to add <includeonly>safesubst:</includeonly> before all the #if: and inside the {{PAGENAME}} so that it substitutes cleanly. I know that the {{REVISIONID}} returns the revision id for the current page, but I am not aware of how you would get that same id for another page. I checked title objects in the LUA manual and don't see revision id there, which is the basic interface for querying page properties from LUA, although some people at Help:Lua might know more than me. Frietjes (talk) 19:19, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! I will abandon the version ID idea for now, it can spend some years in the "too hard basket" :). --Tom (LT) (talk) 22:53, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Follow-up question 1

@Frietjes one follow-up question if you have time. My ideal situation, the editor will subst like this: {{subst:User:Tom (LT)/sandbox/Close peer review|archive=N}}; if the editor doesn't specify 'archive=N' then the archive will automatically be set to '1'. But unfortunately this produces the ridiculous text |archive={{#if:|{{{archive}}}|1}} when I the template is actually substituted on my trial page (User:Tom (LT)/sandbox/PR close examples). What have I done wrong... --Tom (LT) (talk) 23:58, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
Tom (LT), see above where I mentioned safesubst: and in particular, try this. Frietjes (talk) 14:35, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for that, it works fine now. Although I looked up some relevant technical documentation, I couldn't wrap my head around safesubt! --Tom (LT) (talk) 23:54, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Follow-up question 2

Another question for you!! I have a tricky one for you this time, which is to add a category reflecting a review's time of creation to this template: {{subst:Peer review/subst}}. The review should be added to Category:June 2015 peer reviews

What happens now

An editor requests a peer review by putting {{Peer review}} on an article's talk page, a new review page is created based on {{Peer review/preload1}} (there are 10 templates based on the topic of the request).

The preloaded information on the new review pages all contain text based on {{subst:Peer review/subst}}

What I want to do

I want to put all the relevant substituted stuff into the /subst to make maintaining this very confusing template set easier.

After this change I will make the two templates {{Peer review page}} (on the page) and {{Peer review/archive}} (which editors insert when closing a review) symmetrical. Each will display a message if the review is open or not, and they can add the review to a category of either open or closed reviews.

Done I feel quite proud about this one. --Tom (LT) (talk) 11:45, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

Follow-up question 3

I also have a year's worth of brownie points (redeemable at any time) on offer if you can find a better solution to the need for the ten {{Peer review/preload}}N templates.

The reason there is ten is that each differs by having a different 'X' in {{Peer review page|topic = X}} which is present on each of the preloaded pages. That's the entire difference.

If there is a better way to do this part, that would probably make the other part of this request much easier, as then most of the substituted content could be directly included in the single preload page instead.

As always, with many thanks, --Tom (LT) (talk) 07:24, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

With no reply, I have tried to make my vegetable soup of a question much easier to read. The old question is in diffs. --Tom (LT) (talk) 10:53, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

Progress!!

I have found a very sneaky way to include the revision ID automatically. See User:Tom (LT)/sandbox/Close peer review request

Something like {{safesubst:REVISIONID:{{safesubst:PAGENAME}}}} should work (for example 986192978 gives the revision ID of the page WP:PR)

One slight problem I'm having is getting the substitution right. I'm so close!! Any ideas?

Thanks for your patience as I update you about this stuff. I am really appreciating your help along the way here. --Tom (LT) (talk) 10:53, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

Done. It turned out this was actually working, and just a problem due to the location I was testing it. All my questions have been addressed. Thanks for your silent support. --Tom (LT) (talk) 23:29, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Technical Barnstar
Just wanted to say a massive thanks for your work on the Election results template. Not only is it a big help for getting some consistency in presentation, but the automatic totalling and percentage calculation has helped identify several errors in the tables (both from editors mistranscribing numbers from sources, and mistakes in the sources themselves) by comparing the automatically-calculated totals/percentages with those given in the original tables/sources. This will be a big help in maintaining accuracy! Number 57 22:32, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

Third English Civil War

Hi Frietjes, I was wondering why you reverted some of my changes to the infobox of Third English Civil War with this edit? Thanks. Gog the Mild (talk) 14:16, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

Gog the Mild, as mentioned in the edit summary, you can't have duplicate parameters in the infobox. so, only one value for |result=. you can see these errors if you use "show preview" before saving. Frietjes (talk) 14:17, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
Got it. Silly of me. Thanks. Gog the Mild (talk) 14:19, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

Hello. Is there a table class to make vertically aligned wikitable (<tbody>) rows? It seems tedious and repetitive to keep on adding style="vertical-align:top;" on each table row that needs vertical alignment.–Sanglahi86 (talk) 16:12, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Sanglahi86, I would suggest asking at MediaWiki talk:Common.css. looking there, the only match that I found was for infobox tags which does much more. one option may be to create a template that inserts templatestyles to do it locally on that page. a complete overkill solution would be to use Template:Aligned table, but that seems like applying a large hammer to the situation. Frietjes (talk) 16:21, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the prompt response and for the useful info. I'll try asking on that page.–Sanglahi86 (talk) 16:40, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
Sanglahi86, if that doesn't work out (or you get tired of waiting for a result), we can always create a template named something like {{vertical-align-top}} that injects some css before the table, that would then enable you to use |class=vertical-align-top. it would take about 5 minutes to make that happen. Frietjes (talk) 16:47, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
Hello, I have posted a request on that page. I wasn't aware of the para template. Yes please, if nothing happens on the request, please do the workaround template as you see fit, as I am not familiar with such complex templates. Thank you very much.–Sanglahi86 (talk) 17:07, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
Sanglahi86, looks unlikely that they will add anything to MediaWiki:Common.css, which would have been the least complicated approach, but they did point to an earlier thread suggesting templatestyles, which a suggested name for the class, so we can probably do that. Template:Infobox school

Hi, in your edit here where Category:Pages using infobox school with an unknown country was added, I don't think it is working correctly. The tracking category has over 13K in it, but it looks like the category is showing all the articles where infobox school is used, and where the 'country' parameter is wikilinked, like: Ghana, instead of Ghana (non-linked). Because, when you take one of the articles and remove the wikilink on the country parameter, then the article does not go into the tracking category. Essentially, the tracking category is only showing where the countries are wikilinked, and not if they're missing a country data template, which seems to be the result desired. I don't know enough on how to fix the template, but are asking for your help in this. Thanks, Funandtrvl (talk) 22:24, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

Well one thing I like about this is that it tells us which articles have the country wikilinked as it should not be wikilinked Steven (Editor) (talk) 22:56, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
then I should put a note on the blank template that editors copy to that effect. Funandtrvl (talk) 23:40, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
I have used this category to unlink the country with AWB. So far I have just done a couple of hundred. MB 01:51, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
@Funandtrvl, Steven (Editor), and MB: I split that category so that pages with |country=] will go in Pages using infobox school with a linked country. the regular expression only matches if it's a single wikilink. the idea being that we could probably preprocess those with Module:Delink instead of counting on editors to follow instructions. Frietjes (talk) 13:50, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
I myself, didn't realize that linking the country in the template was not desired! Evidently, the country data template doesn't work with the linking? Funandtrvl (talk) 16:10, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
Funandtrvl, I don't really have an opinion on the linking vs. non-linking. the entire point of the tracking category was the country is piped through {{Getalias}} and {{Getalias}} doesn't check if the template exists before attempting to use it. so, to avoid generating massive numbers of bad template transclusions, I added the #ifexist: to catch bad entries before piping them through. but, in case there was a plan for these bad template transclusions, I created the tracking category to hold any transclusions that were previously failing. I don't have any opinion on whether or not these should be changed, but we could definitely make the infobox more robust and do whatever is desired. Frietjes (talk) 16:15, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
Thank you so much for all your work and your explanations! I understand that there is a whole complicated system behind WP, so I don't think I'll ever figure it out!! :-) Funandtrvl (talk) 17:48, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
Funandtrvl, MOS:OVERLINK says don't link common words and major countries. There may be some small countries where a link may be appropriate. Another common cause of this is flag icons in the country field which should also be removed per MOS:FLAGICON. MB 01:16, 22 September 2020 (UTC)

Any chance this can be renamed?

Hey Frietjes, hope you're doing well, I can see that you created Category:Articles using infobox school with the module parameter — is there any chance the "Articles" part can be changed to "Pages" so that it matches the other tracking categories for consistency? Not a big deal anyway, please let me know, thanks Steven (Editor) (talk) 22:52, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

Steven (Editor), okay. it used to be that when {{main other}} was used the convention was to use "Articles" instead of "Pages", but I don't think people are generally being that pedantic anymore. Frietjes (talk) 13:47, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
I see, thank you :) Steven (Editor) (talk) 18:00, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
