Final Fantasy XVI is an upcoming action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 5 as a part of the Final Fantasy series. The game is being produced by Naoki Yoshida and directed by Hiroshi Takai.

Premise

Final Fantasy XVI is an action role-playing game set in a fantasy world divided between several factions, including the Twin Kingdoms and Zambrek Empire. The world is suffering from a malady called the Blight, which is kept at bay by the Mothercrystal. A central part of the plot are Eikons, summoned monsters controlled by or manifesting through humans dubbed Dominants; a mystery is the appearance of two Eikons of fire, Phoenix and Ifrit. Gameplay has the protagonist fighting using a combination of melee-based sword attacks and magical abilities.

Development

Final Fantasy XVI is being developed by Square Enix Creative Business Unit III, the same division behind the development and maintenance of the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. The game is being produced by Naoki Yoshida, director of Final Fantasy XIV; and directed by Hiroshi Takai, known for his work on the SaGa series and The Last Remnant. Takai described the development process has been challenging due to the establishment of a new development environment and the transition to developing for new gaming platform, suggesting that the process has been arduous for the team and progressing slowly.

During the original announcement, the game was also said to be releasing on Microsoft Windows, however the trailer released outside the PlayStation 5 event specifies this game is a timed console exclusive. This was then followed by a statement by video game analysts, Piers Harding-Rolls, stating it will be a full exclusive for 6 months and a console exclusive for 12 months. The game has yet to have a release date, however more info will be revealed in an event in 2021.
