"Codeine" is a song by Canadian rapper Nav, featuring vocals from American rapper Gunna. The song is the seventh song on Nav's third studio album, Good Intentions, which was released on May 8, 2020.
Background
The song was first teased on September 30, 2019, through American rapper Young Thug's Instagram story. This was mostly because Gunna is signed to Thug's record label, YSL Records. Thug is also close to Nav due to Gunna and American rapper and singer Travis Scott, a mutual collaborator of the two. On December 27, 2019, it was teased again by Nav on his Instagram story. "Codeine" was written by Nav, Gunna, Nav's manager Cash, and Pro Logic, while it was produced by the former and latter.
Nav and Gunna rap about their choice of drugs on the song. The title of the song itself is the name a drug called codeine, which is a cough syrup used for healing. However, if it is used in the wrong way, it could be considered a drug. For example, if an excessive amount of codeine is poured alongside Jolly Ranchers in a cup of Sprite, and it is drank, this would be called lean and this drug is known to get you high.
Nav and Gunna's single, the long-awaited and highly-anticipated "Turks", featuring American rapper and singer Travis Scott, was released previously on March 27, 2020, and is also on the same album, as the lead single.
Commercial performance
The track reached number ten on Apple Music following its release. The track debuted at number 86 on the Canadian Hot 100.
