There are several Gothrams in the Brahmin community. If a brahmin belongs to Gothram x, it means that he has descended throught direct male line, from the brahmarishi x.

When a girl marries, she belongs to her husband's Gothram. Sons belong to their father's Gothram.

The Gothrams are common to both the Iyers and Iyengars. The most common of the Gothrams is Bharthwaja Gothram, to which Drona of the Mahabharatha also belonged.
