In the late 1970's he took over as Capo of the crew of Antonio "Buckaloo" Ferro. Upon his rise to Captain Sammy quickly became one of the most powerful members of the family. In 1981, Philip "Benny Squint" Lombardo promoted Sammy to Underboss and Vincent Gigante to Boss. Gigante and Santora were considered to be the most powerful and respected captains in the family. Sammy would remain underboss until his death in the late 1980's. Acting Boss Liborio "Barney" Bellomo is considered a protege of Sammy Santora.
