In the late 1970's, Santora took over as capo of the crew of Antonio "Buckaloo" Ferro. Santora quickly became one of the most powerful captains in the family. The crew was involved in heroin trafficking and labor racketeering, specifically in the NYC District of Carpenters.
In 1981, longtime boss Philip "Benny Squint" Lombardo went into semi-retirement. Vincent "the Chin" Gigante and Santora were the prime candidates to become boss, being two of the most respected and influential members of the family. Lombardo appointed Gigante as boss and Santora as underboss. Santora would continue as underboss of the family until his death in the late 1980's.
Acting Boss Liborio "Barney" Bellomo is considered a protege of Santora.
