American writer and crossword editor

Patti Varol is an American writer and editor of the Los Angeles Times crossword.

Early life and education

Varol grew up playing games and solving puzzles with her family. After graduating from Iona College, she found a puzzle editing job at Penny Press.

Career

Varol became editor of The Crosswords Club, a monthly publication featuring Sunday-sized (21x21) crosswords. She described her goals as making puzzles that are "accessible and fun for every solver, regardless of race, gender, or age" and "stretching, testing, and entertaining" solvers.

Varol co-founded Women of Letters, a crossword pack to raise funds for women-centric charities. Constructed entirely by women, the puzzle pack was described as a "valuable corrective" in a male-dominated field. Varol became editor of the Los Angeles Times crossword in 2022 following the retirement of Rich Norris, whom Varol described as a kind mentor. While working as Norris's assistant editor, Varol recognized solvers' sensibilities regarding potentially objectionable subjects, such as a celebrity whose reputation is overshadowed by allegations of sexual abuse. Varol contrasted her editing style with Norris's approach by commenting that she uses more pop culture, more current references, and takes more chances with themes.

In 2020, Time magazine described Varol as a veteran crossword editor and constructor. The LA Review of Books described Varol as "leading the puzzle vanguard" along with Anna Shechtman, Liz Maynes-Aminzade at The New Yorker, and Juliana Pache with her Black crosswords. On her first anniversary as LA Times crossword editor, Varol noted that she had achieved full gender parity for constructors each month of that year.

Personal life

Varol is a baseball fan. She called The Magicians her "favorite train wreck of a TV show".
