War in Iraq (2013–2017)War in Iraq (2014–2017) – Sources, media and people refer to the June 4 ISIL offensive in Iraq, in which ISIL fighters came from syria and expanded their territory in Iraq from controlling just Fallujah to 40% of Iraqi territory, as the beginning of the “war”. Most sources don’t date the beginning of the war in december 2013 when clashes broke out only in the towns of ramadi and fallujah. Here are articles that indicate the war begun in the 2014 june offensive: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2020/02/kurdish-leader-isis-conflict-iraq-iran/606502/ “ Kurdish fighters, called peshmerga, defended their territory from the ISIS onslaught in 2014”, https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-42291985 “ The jihadist group had seized large swathes of Syria and Iraq in 2014”, https://www.dw.com/en/iraq-declares-end-of-war-against-islamic-state/a-41724333 “IS rose to notoriety in 2014, when it captured large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, culminating in the sacking and occupation of Mosul.”, https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/12/9/iraqi-pm-abadi-declares-end-of-war-against-isil “The quick advance by ISIL in Iraq began in 2014.“ also “Saturday’s announcement marks the end of the three-year war to drive ISIL out of Iraq.” 3 minus 2017 equals 2014 which means the article says the war started in 2014. Ridax2020 (talk) 20:16, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Relisting. Mdewman6 (talk) 23:37, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

I expected that this problem wouldn’t matter if we moved to Iraq–ISIL War, but that didn’t get consensus. Ridax2020 (talk) 20:19, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

Oppose, you voted for this name with your older account Ehoah88880. stick with the current name. Shadow4dark (talk) 18:36, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

:::We’re here to converse a moving request, not to fight like as if we’re on a social media app. About you saying we should stick with the current name, this article https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20210622-hashed-armed-alliance-rising-to-dominate-iraq-experts also says the main war started in 2014. ”The Hashed was created seven years ago to battle the Sunni extremist Islamic State group which had seized almost a third of Iraq in a lightning offensive.” 7 years ago was 2014. War in Iraq (2013–2017)War against ISIS in Iraq – picking this specifically because this phrasing (or a variation of this with "ISIL" instead of "ISIS") was used frequently during the time this war was taking place.

For example:

Thoughts? DJ (talk) 17:41, 21 September 2022 (UTC) — Relisting. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 07:33, 29 September 2022 (UTC)

Did you look above move discussions? Shadow4dark (talk) 17:55, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
I have, in fact. If this move isn't successful or receives a procedural close, I'll accept it. I was just providing my own rationale about a possible title change, if only to emphasis the fact that this specific "war against ISIS / ISIL in Iraq" phrase is something that shows up a not-insignificant number of times. DJ (talk) 21:27, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

oppose at the early and ending phase iraq had more conflicts with other groups, Anbar campaign (2013–2014) Battle of Kirkuk (2017) 2017 Iraqi–Kurdish conflict Northern Iraq offensive (June 2014. Islamic state was main conflic but we had many other smaller groups and conflicts. Shadow4dark (talk) 04:52, 25 September 2022 (UTC)

Combined death toll problem

So, according to my math, the combined death toll given the numbers in the template, is 217,500 rather than 212,500. Should we correct the figure then? Gorgedweller (talk) 10:11, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

Corrected it a while ago. Hope it doesn't hurt 79.164.72.106 (talk) 20:00, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

War in Iraq (2013–2017)Second Iraq War – The proposed title is more recognizable and understandable to the readers. It is precise as well as more concise than the current lengthier title. "Second Iraq War" is also the more popular common name than the current title. (Ngram search results) . Some readers could be confused by the current title and equate it with the war waged by the United States in Iraq during 2003-2011, which is known as the Iraq war. Shadowwarrior8 (talk) 03:12, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

  • Support – Per Shadowwarrior8's reasoning for the move. GWA88 (talk) 19:09, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
  • Oppose. The Google Ngrams you cite are misleading. "War in Iraq" is much more common than "Second Iraq War". Rreagan007 (talk) 19:33, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
  • Support. it not only looks nicer, but is more accurate Lukt64 (talk) 21:32, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
  • Support. The current title is wordy and confusing. KD0710 (talk) 03:49, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Firstly, if we extend the above ngram back, we find the term "Second Iraq War" has been in vogue all the way back to about 2001, and peaked in 2007, so it doesn't particularly refer to the period under discussion in this article. Indeed, I'm not seeing that the term has a precise and agreed meaning at all, particularly as a proper name, - in some cases it refers to the 2003 Iraq War itself, with the Gulf war as the first, in others it refers to something else. As RReagan notes, the common name remains War in Iraq, with the year range simply serving as a disambiguator to clearly separate it from other eras. The idea that this is "confusing" is baffling frankly.  — Amakuru (talk) 05:11, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
  • Oppose per Amakuru. Koopinator (talk) 13:47, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
  • Oppose, current name fits better because Iraq had so many wars that "second Iraq war" is confusing and misleading. Shadow4dark (talk) 07:52, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Rename the article

Should we perhaps rename the article to Iraqi civil war, or should we say, second Iraqi civil war, just like Syrian civil war and first and second Libyan civil war? Iuiopaz (talk) 16:34, 13 August 2024 (UTC)

Please check top templates with previous discussions about the name. Shadow4dark (talk) 17:20, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
