Central Avenue (Tampa)

Central Avenue in Tampa, Florida is a road in downtown that was the heart of its African American community before being seized by eminent domain and razed for interstate construction and a park.

It was on the western wdge of the neighborgood known as The Scrub. A historical marker commemorates its history.

In the 1890s seven businesses were located on it.

The Cotton Club was a music venue where performers from the Chitlin Circuit performed.

Historian Fred Hearns has offered tours of the area. Perry Harvey Park is located in the area.

WEDU produced a documentary on Central Avenue and its history.
