...And The Music Play On is the 10th studio album by American singer-songwriter Del Shannon, released in March 1978 by Sunset Records. The album was produced by Shannon Himself, Dave Edmunds, Andrew Oldham, & Dan Bougoise. it was released in The UK & Australia Only.
It featured songs that were previously recorded but were released here for the first time, other songs ("Led Along", "Mind Over Matter", "Runaway '67", "He Cheated", "Silently", "It's My Feeling", "Cut and Come Again", "My Love Has Gone", "Life Is But Nothing", "Easy to Say", "Friendly with You") would later released on a lost 1967 Album Home and Away in 2006.
The album was released on compact disc for the first time by Beat Goes On in February, 1996, as tracks 15 through 28 on a pairing of two albums on one CD with tracks 15 through 28 consisting of Shannon's Live Album from November 1973, Live in England. Edsel Records included this CD in a box set entitled Stranger in Town: A Del Shannon Compendium, which contains 14th of his studio albums and three compilation and was released on February 24, 2023.
Background and composition
11 or the 14 original tracks from Andrew Looh Oldham sessions, (where he recorded in 1967 at Olympic Sound Studios)" along with "Raindrops" and "Leaving You Behind", from Shannon's final recording sessions for Liberty Records that was produced by Del and Dan. and the title track, "And The Music Plays On", the one song that Dace Edmunds had produced. (where he recorded in 1974 in England)". The tracks were remixed and not the mix that Andrew had wanted to be. and it left some bad feelings there. Oldham wasn't happy about it, Shannon himself wasn't really happy about, Bourgoise wasn't really happy about it either, the bright and positive side about And The Music Plays On.
Critical reception
The album gained critical praise in some circles. Bruce Eder of AllMusic said that "These are full-blown Phil Spector-style wall-of-sound productions, with very dense and elaborate arrangements of orchestra and chorus, with Shannon's voice at the center".
Manchester Evening News stated that "it dates only 10 years back, not beyond that, when the best work was done".
