Florian Gârz (1 April 1935, Borod, Bihor – 18 January 2022) was a Romanian military officer and writer. He was an officer of the General Directorate for Defense Intelligence from 1961 to 1975, working in the military attaché in London, Beijing and Ankara, and led the intelligence gathering activity in NATO's sphere of interest from 1978 until 1981.

Biography

Gârz was born on April 1, 1935, in the village of Borozel, Borod commune, Bihor county. Following the Second Vienna Award and the loss by Romania of Northern Transylvania in the summer of 1940, his family took refuge in Banat. He graduated from seven classes in the municipality of Reşiţa, standing out as an exceptional student.

Military career

Later on, Gârz dedicated himself to a military career, attending the Dimitrie Cantemir Military National College, which he graduated in 1954, being part of a "golden class" that also included the great poet, writer and playwright Marin Sorescu. He graduated from the Nicolae Bălcescu Military Officers School in 1957, the Academy of Higher Military Studies in 1972 and the Post-Academy Course in Strategy in 1986, all with the title of class leader. He spent his military career, from the rank of lieutenant to colonel, within the Military Intelligence Directorate.

Gârz's life was suddenly changed in August 1955, when he held a position as a platoon commander in the Infantry Regiment of the Caransebeş Garrison. The Regiment Commander found himself with an order from the General Staff by which he was transferred, without any explanation, to Military Unit no. 02472 in Bucharest. After some adventures, he arrived at Valter Mărăcineanu Square, where the headquarters of the Ministry of Armed Forces is located, namely the General Staff, were also located.

Between 1961 and 1975, he carried out missions in the line of strategic research in London, Beijing and Ankara. His exceptional English teacher, Alexandru Odobeșteanu from the University of Bucharest, made available to him some collections of accessible texts for him, including elements of the culture and history of Great Britain.

During 1978-1981, Gârz led the intelligence gathering activity in the area of NATO member states, and during 1982-1984, he was the head of the Analysis-Synthesis Section of the Military Intelligence Directorate (DIM). He was dismissed from this position by the Ministry of National Defense, General Constantin Olteanu, for "inappropriate attitude towards the supreme commander". In June 1984, he had requested the resignation of Nicolae Ceaușescu.

During 1991-1997, he held the position of advisor in the Department for Defense, National Security and Public Order and head of the Secretary of the Supreme Council for National Defense within the Romanian Presidency.
