Delta Sigma Phi is a fraternity established in 1899 at City College of New York. It was the first fraternity based on religious and ethnic acceptance.

The name Alpha Xi chapter was originally missed in the naming structure, perhaps because the Hilgard chapter at UC Berkeley would have been named Xi chapter had the customary naming process been followed about that chapter. It wasn't until 25 years later that a correction was made and the designation Alpha Xi was issued to the University of New Mexico. This is why the chapter name comes up out of chronological order.
