History

In the 15th century the Count of Provence owned the land, and from 1603 to the French Revolution it belonged to the Covets. In the 17th century the Covets refurbished the castle.

Three chapels and one convent were built in the 17th and 18th century: Notre-Dame de Pitié (1635), Saint-Nicolas (1695), Sainte-Anne (1710, now demolished), and Couvent des Minimes (1695).

Rape of Marignane

German troops, afraid of French guerrilla fighters, or francs-tireurs ("free shooters"), burned homes and murdered civilians throughout southern France, including Marignane (156 murdered), Marseilles (211 murdered), Rognac, Vitrolles (383 murdered), and Le Rove (674 murdered). German soldiers murdered Marignane civilians indiscriminately and with impunity, with victims including men, women, and children. Nuns were forcibly stripped naked under the pretext that they were spies or men in disguise. Between August 19 and the recapture of the town by September 9, German soldiers repeatedly raped Marignane women. Rape was nearly as ubiquitous as murder, arson and looting, if never as visible.
