Md. Nazrul Islam is a Bangladeshi diplomat and former ambassador of Bangladesh to Bahrain. He is an additional foreign secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Early life
Islam completed his bachelor's and master's in economics from the University of Dhaka. He did his PhD at the University of New England (Australia) in water policy and governance.
Career
Islam joined the foreign service of the Bangladesh Civil Service in 1995.
From 2002 to 2003, Islam was the first secretary at the Embassy of Bangladesh in Iraq.
Islam served at the Embassy of Bangladesh to South Korea from 1999 to 2002. From 2004 to 2006, he was the director (SAARC and BIMSTEC) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Islam was a counselor at the Bangladesh High Commission to Australia from 2007 to 2010. From 2011 to 2014, Islam was the director general of parliamentary affairs and the director general of West and Central Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In July 2014, he was promoted to a grade 3 officer.
From July 2014 to June 2015, Islam was the in-charge of the Bangladesh embassy in Lebanon. He had taken over from Ambassador AFM Gousal Azam Sarker who had faced allegations of mismanagement and was withdrawn from the embassy.
From 2015 to 2019, Islam was the deputy permanent representative to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. From July 2015 to February 2020, he was the deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of Bangladesh to Saudi Arabia. He was the ambassador of Bangladesh to the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition from October 2018 to November 2019. He was then appointed the ambassador of Bangladesh to the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Islam returned from Bahrain on 7 September 2023 and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an additional foreign secretary.
Personal life
Islam is married to Najmun Nahar Habib.
