NGC 5144 is an unbarred spiral galaxy located in the constellation of Ursa Minor. It has a velocity of 3,202 ± 9 km/s corresponding to a Hubble Distance of 47.2 ± 3.3 megaparsecs (154 million light-years). It was discovered by William Herschel in May 1791.

The luminosity class of NGC 5144 is classified as III with a broad HI line. It is a possible field galaxy which isn't belonging to a group or any cluster, making it gravitationally isolated.

NGC 5144 is also a starburst galaxy and classified as a Markarian galaxy (designated as MRK 256), since its core emits out excessive amounts of ultraviolet light.
