On 30 May 2023, it was proposed that this article be moved to Illyrian Shepherd Dog. The result of the discussion was not moved.

Meaning of "Illyrian"

The original official name (Illyrian Shepherd Dog, Ilirski ovčar), has nothing to do with Albania. Please check Illyrian Provinces, Illyrian Academy (1703), Illyrian movement. The word "Illyrian" was used in a pure South-Slavic context. N Jordan (talk) 18:49, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Although some opinions are different , and state that the Albanians are descends of illyria.

completely irrelevant in this case.
As the article states, the dog was registered by Yugoslavian Cynology Society as Ilyrian and then changed to Yugoslav. As the previous user stated, it has nothing to do with Albania Pixius talk 19:43, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

ŠarplaninacIllyrian Shepherd Dog – Illyrian Shepherd Dog is the WP:COMMONNAME in the English language. "Šarplaninac" is the name used by South Slavs, and "Deltari Ilir" or "Qen Sharrit" is the name used by Albanians - either way, none of these names are in the English language, and they are also not the common name as is indicated by search results on Google Books:

Search Results for Illyrian Shepherd Dog - 11,100.

Search Results for Šarplaninac - 2,030.

In conclusion, Šarplaninac is not the WP:COMMONNAME in the English language, whereas Illyrian Shepherd Dog - it can be used as a redirect, but definitely should not be the article's title. Botushali (talk) 01:49, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

  • Comment Illyrian Shepherd Dog is a redirect to a disambiguation page which lists this breed as well as Karst Shepherd, and this article states that the Karst Shepherd was once considered a sub-type of Šarplaninac. FCI lists English names for this breed as "YUGOSLAVIAN SHEPHERD DOG - SHARPLANINA"; but "Yugoslavian" may not work well if this breed is also in Albanaia. I'm not seeing a reported number of Google results following the links given above, but multiple word searches need to be enclosed in quotes in order to search for a phrase, rather than words occurring in different places in a single page. Reported results will be lower if "Illyrian Shepherd Dog" is searched rather than Illyrian+Shepherd+Dog. Additionally, a bunch of the first results from that link to the search for Illyrian+Shepherd+Dog are indices of books, where the index has "Illyrian Shepherd Dog see Sarplaninac". • Oppose. A quick glance in Google Books shows a load of sources using Šarplaninac and it's by this name that the Dog is known in most Western countries. One another, less common name in English is Sharplanina, which seems much more common in French, where it is spelled Charplanina (French ch is equivalent to English sh).
