Jean Daret (1613–1668) was a French artist, specialising in historical pictures on Biblical and mythological themes.
Biography
Jean Daret was born in Brussels in 1613. He settled in Aix-en-Provence where in 1639 he married Madeleine Cabassole, from a well-known local family. They had two sons, Jean-Baptiste and Michel, both of whom became artists.
Put in charge of the works of art at the château de Vincennes, he was appointed an official painter for King Louis XIV. He specialised in decorating mansions, namely Chateau de Chateaurenard, at Rue Gaston Saporta, in Aix-en-Provence. He also created the magnificant painting commissioned by the seigneur de Covet for his château at Marignane, notably those in the "Mirabeau Hall".
He died in Aix-en-Provence on the 2 September 1668 at age 55.
