Modderfontein Commando was a light infantry regiment of the South African Army. It formed part of the South African Army Infantry Formation
History
Formation
The Modderfontein Commando has its origins dating back to the period preceding World War II; however, it was officially established in 1969 as a standard Urban Commando within the South African Defence Force (SADF). Initially, the unit was placed under the command of Group 18 HQ in Doornkop until at least 1982. Subsequently, it was reassigned to Group 42 HQ in Lenz. Just after 1982 the Commando underwent a significant restructuring, becoming a fully operational defence Commando, with the responsibility of safeguarding the AECI Modderfontein Dynamite Factory, which at that time was the largest manufacturer of explosives in the world.
