Feature: Weekly Collaboration

The VG Project Collaboration of the Week is a new effort to improve important video game articles of low quality. Every week, an article is random selected by AnomieBOT from the Stub-, Start-, and C-class categories that are rated either High- or Top-importance. Such topics can offer a reader a good deal of encyclopedic information about video games, but are often too underdeveloped or lacking the proper level of writing and sourcing to accomplish this.

All editors are welcome and encouraged to participate by offering their insights and suggestions. Having a pool of different editors, both old and new, will help maximize improvements to the articles as well as our editing skills.

History

Collaborative efforts have come and gone within the VG project several times before. The first such effort, the "Gaming collaboration of the week", began in October 2004 as a result of the several other weekly collaborations popping up on Misplaced Pages. It proved to be quite successful at improving articles to meet Misplaced Pages's standard at the time, but the effort eventually saw less and less participation. A second effort, the "Improvement Drive", began in August 2005 with the intent of improving articles to FA-quality. However, few nominations and articles were selected. The decline in participation in the collaborations and peer reviews resulted in a third effort. It began in February 2006 as a workshop, but never got off the ground.

Numerous discussions have taken place on at WT:VG to jump start collaborations and improve the process to prevent its decline again. While previous collaborations selected any video game article, most editors felt focus should be on video game topics more encyclopedic in nature—topics that are also generally in poor shape because of lack of attention. A common problem mentioned was that previous nomination processes were lengthy and hindered participation. The current idea to automate the process was brought up by JohnnyMrNinja, which was further discussed to iron out the details.

Current collaboration

The current collaborative efforts began in mid-January 2009, and several articles have been improved by editors. The random choice is intended to minimize the selection process, which allows editors to focus on article improvement. Improvements include better organization of content, massaging and copy editing the prose, removing excess non-free images, and much more. The random choice is also meant to encourage participation from editors of varying interest and help prevent burnout. If the present selection is not to your liking, wait until next week. Editors are encouraged to add Template:Collab-gaming to their watchlist to see which article is selected. Recently selected articles are:

WholeSecurity

WholeSecurity and AntiBot are not related! I used to work there. This article in the 3rd paragraph talks about how AntiBot and SONAR (developed by WholeSecurity) are complementary therefore implying they are not related (how can something complement itself??!!). The WholeSecurity article is still relevant as it was a full company that employed about 100 people. It was real and the article describes what they did. http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-9727254-7.html "Norton AntiBot is designed to complement Symantec's existing SONAR technology, a behavior-monitoring and blocking feature acquired from a company called Whole Security last year and currently available on Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, and Norton 360."--66.25.175.163 (talk) 23:11, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

All right, let's not get engaged in an edit war. Remember not to make more than 3 reverts within 24 hours; it is a blockable offense. TechOutsider (talk) 20:15, 25 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
I'm sorry, but I have utterly no idea what you are talking about. Artichoker 22:00, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

(Ir)relevant sentence

Hello, Artichoker! You recently reverted an edit of mine concerning a sentence in the "Development" section of the Pokémon Red and Blue page. The sentence I'm referring to is:
"Regardless, this same strategy of creating a normally-unobtainable Pokémon was employed in later generations via Celebi, Deoxys, and Arceus respectively."
When I saw this sentence initially, I thought it just needed to be rewritten ("respectively" doesn't belong in the sentence, for example). I then realized the sentence has absolutely nothing to do with the development of Red/Blue, or even Red/Blue in general, so I removed it. Why do you say it belongs? -Sesu Prime (talk) 11:10, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

My reply here. Artichoker 01:08, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey, Artichoker. I just don't think that sentence is relevant enough to belong in the article.

By the way, "respectively" is used when there are two lists within the same sentence that correlate to each other in the order in which their items appear. For example, if someone simply wrote, "Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina are on the covers of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum", then it implies that all three Pokémon are pictured on each cover. But, by adding "respectively" to the end of that sentence, it clarifies that Dialga = Diamond, Palkia = Pearl, and Giratina = Platinum. However, if the sentence read, "Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina are on the covers of the fourth-generation games", then "respectively" wouldn't be used, as there's only one list in that sentence, and thus there are no individual items with which "Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina" can correlate. I know, it's kind of confusing. ; -) Sesu Prime (talk) 09:39, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

My reply here. Artichoker 18:00, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey, Artichoker. Sorry for not getting back to you sooner (I was busy becoming a WoW addict). Anyway, I don't think the Celebi, Deoxys, and Arceus bit belongs because it doesn't enhance the reader's understanding of how Red and Blue were developed. The Red/Blue article is simply not the place for that information.

Er, and about "respectively": as I pointed out in my (admittedly over-complicated) examples, it doesn't fit in that sentence because the generations aren't listed within the sentence. If you really want "respectively" in the sentence, then it should be written as follows: "This same strategy of creating a normally-unobtainable Pokémon was later employed in Generations II, III, and IV via Celebi, Deoxys, and Arceus, respectively."

By the way, I still think the sentence should be removed. I'm just clarifying how "respectively" should be used for your own wikibenefit. -Sesu Prime (talk) 17:29, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

P.S. I know wikibenefit isn't a real wikiword, and I know wikiword isn't a real, um... wikiterm, and I know wikiterm isn't, oh nevermind. ;- }

My reply here. Artichoker 18:02, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

é e é e é e é e

Hello again, Artichoker. You and I both know the only correct spelling is "Pokémon", not "Pokemon", "pokémon", or "pokemon", and certainly not "Pokeman". Any Pokémon fan knows this, but the media apparently does not (even video game websites usually type "Pokemon"). They either don't know the correct spelling, or don't know how to type the é. Anyway, I realize that many (if not most) sources use an incorrect spelling, but as Misplaced Pages is a tool for learning, I don't think we should use incorrect forms (except when used in quotations, which should always be followed by ). Either we should go through each time Pokémon is misspelled in a reference and add , or simply fix the spelling. Thoughts? -Sesu Prime (talk) 04:49, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

My reply here. Artichoker 18:00, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Okay. I'm with you now on leaving all the Pokemon as is within references. However, there are two instances within the body of the article of Pokemon being used. They're both in a quote, so rather than change them to Pokémon, they should both be followed by . -Sesu Prime (talk) 16:02, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

My reply here. Artichoker 16:06, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

There's a reason I didn't use the Wikilinked for the second "Pokemon": Template:Sic says not to use the Wikilinked version when is used multiple times close together. -Sesu Prime (talk) 16:23, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

My reply here. Artichoker 18:02, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Have a second?

Hello again, Artichoker! Er, I have a favor to ask of you if you have the time. Could you take a look at the Pokémon mini article? I've done extensive editing to it since early February and I would like your input on how it looks now compared to before I made my first edit. I think all the game descriptions still need to be rewritten, and I think the picture should be replaced with a more professional-looking one. What says you? Any constructive criticism is appreciated. Thanks! -Sesu Prime (talk) 17:56, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Image upload help!

Hello, Artichoker. I have two images I want to upload, but I'm having trouble figuring out the copyright status. One of them is of a Virtual Boy controller and the other is of a Pokémon mini. The Nintendo logo is prominently shown on both, which is obviously trademarked, but I took both photographs myself, so do I own the copyright? Or does Nintendo?
I've found seemingly contradictory information on this: the Wii article has nine pictures, eight of which are from Wikimedia Commons, but Commons' policy doesn't allow copyrighted images to be uploaded. So, are my photographs okay for Commons or should they be uploaded directly to Misplaced Pages using free-use rationale? Thanks in advance. -sesuPRIME 03:08, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
PS: I realize there's already a picture of a VB controller and Pokémon mini, but mine are much more professional-looking.

Hey, Artichoker. Thanks for pointing me to WT:VG. Someone there answered my question and I uploaded my two pictures, then affixed them to their respective articles. Thanks again. -sesuPRIME 02:43, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Feature: VG Barnstar
The Video Game Barnstar
The VG Barnstar is an award given to Wikipedians recognized for efforts and contributions to improve and develop video game related articles.

The VG Barnstar is one of many Misplaced Pages Barnstars designed to be given to editors that have helped further the overall quality of Misplaced Pages. It was created in February 2006 by Jacoplane—see past discussion for details—and has been given to numerous editors since. Sometimes editors with multiple Barnstars use an alternative way to display them: ribbons.

Barnstars are designed to be given by anyone, so don't be shy as everyone enjoys appreciation. If you have noticed or have been impressed with the work of an editor, feel free to let them know by placing {{subst:Barnstar VG|"message" ~~~~}} on their talk page. The template uses a parameter to include a message expressing the reasons behind the award.

Ezra Klein quote on Conservapedia article

My initial edit was kind of randomly made, and I'm surprised it got any pushback, so I'm half making this comment out of curiosity. What is it, precisely, that the Klein comment adds to a reader's understanding of Conservapedia? Klein's comment, about half of which is a hat tip to DeGroot, appears to me contentless snark. About all I can get out of it that Klein and DeGroot are derisive of Conservapedia. Nor is it clearly tied to the preceding sentence. If I didn't get it, I presume that it won't be of much value to others. But I'm interested in hearing the other side of it, so hit me back here or my talk page when you get a chance. Cheers, WWB (talk) 14:08, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

My reply here. Artichoker 15:11, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
Dunno if you have a preference for keeping these conversations in one place, but I'll reply here for the sake of reciprocity. You say the quote is "relevant because it provides third-party coverage" of the subject. This doesn't quite address my point that the coverage in question is not very illuminating. And you say both sentences relate to religion, but here's the exact quote from Klein's column as cited in the article now: "As Daniel DeGroot notes, you've got to wonder which 'unreasonable' explanations they rejected when formulating that entry." What explanations? There's no there there, you know what I mean? I don't have the time now, but I think we could find something with a little more context. Does this make sense? Cheers, WWB (talk) 17:00, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Diamond, Pearl, & Platinum info

Hey Artichoker there was a discussion on the Wikiproject that you might find interesting; while looking for information about Ivysaur, a user found an interview with the game and music directors of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. I'm not sure how to copy and paste it here (the link leads straight to a ZIP file), but it has some really good information on the development fo the games, the music aspect especially, that might be worth inclusion. You're the user who edits the video game articles most frequently, so I figured I'd best bring it to your attention. Cheers, MelicansMatkin (talk) 23:52, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey Artichoker! A barnstar for me!?! Really? Well thank you! You don't know how much it means to me for an experienced editor like yourself to acknowledge my efforts.

I don't know if you know this, but I've looked up to you since I began editing here on Misplaced Pages, as evidenced by my posts on your talk page asking for your help or your opinion. I really appreciate my anti-vandalism barnstar. I hope you don't mind, but I moved it up near the top of my talk page, where it will stay even when I inevitably start archiving my talk. I really, really appreciate my barnstar. You more than made my day. -sesuPRIME  01:11, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

A ref I found, useful for PKMN R/B

It's something not covered by the article, but on this page Satoshi Tajiri notes Makai Toushi SaGa was one of the influences behind the Pokemon games being on the game boy, in a nutshell seeing the game in action showing him the Game Boy could handle more than just action games. I started to work the reference into Pokemon Red and Blue, but since I know the article's your work you might be better at weaving the information into what's there.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 07:50, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Italicizing "Pokémon"

Hey Artichoker. Are you sure it shouldn't be italicized when referring to the franchise as a whole? I'm not sure one way or the other, I'm just going off of what I've seen throughout Misplaced Pages. For example, the first line of all the species articles (except Mewtwo, for some reason) say something like "...is one of the fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar Pokémon media franchise...". It doesn't really matter to me which way we go, but it should be consistent throughout Misplaced Pages. -sesuPRIME 19:08, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

My reply here. Artichoker 19:34, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Hey man, I really, really don't want to see you get blocked for your reversions at Mew (Pokémon), so let's talk this out, okay? -sesuPRIME 23:19, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure if I want to get involved, but from the way I'm looking at it, it does make sense to italicize Pokémon when it refers to the franchise as a whole, and not when it's referring to the noun (e.g. in Mew's case, "legendary Pokémon" is not italicized). TheChrisD 23:33, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Why does it make sense to italicize it when it's referring to the franchise? Why not italicize Google and Wal-mart too? They're franchises as well. Artichoker 01:19, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
I would say mainly because Pokémon can be considered a special case. With two meanings to the word, it makes things a little bit clearer as to whether a certain utterance of Pokémon means the franchise or the noun. Besides, we already italicize all the game names and everything like that, so it makes a bit more sense. TheChrisD 02:51, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
I still don't see what makes Pokémon any more special than Google. Clearness does not excuse incorrect grammar. The game names are correctly italicized just like all other video games, and likewise, when referring to the franchise, it should not be italicized just like all other franchises. Artichoker 02:53, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
If I may interject to respond to Chris, that's a seperate issue from a franchise; games, albums, scientific names, and film titles are always in italics, it's just the correct grammatical way of doing it. Pokémon Red the game is italicized, but Pokémon the franchise is not. MelicansMatkin (talk) 02:56, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
For the sake of keeping discussion on this issue together, let's continue this at WT:PCP#Dispute at Mew (Pokémon). -sesuPRIME 03:43, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

IGN guides

I looked at the previous FAC and noticed the problem with those guides, but it's a very simple one. The author of those are the editorial staff of IGN, but the author parameter was omitted from the references at the time of the FAC. Simply adding it in should solve the problem as it can be confirmed by the first page (they initially developed it to require registration as well, but undid that years later). Just toss "author=Staff" or "author=IGN Staff" in those refs and that'll fix your problems in a jiffy.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 04:17, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Paul McCartney

You deleted the fair-use photo of Dot Rhone, who was McCartney's first serious girlfriend in Liverpool, whom he made pregnant, and then secured the blessing of McCartney’s father for their wedding. Rhone later had a miscarriage, which meant McCartney would break off their relationship. This epsiode is rather important, one would think.

As Linda McCartney and Heather Mills have free-use photos, which show them both to be attractive women, it is of paramount importance to the article that a photo of Rhone is included, as (to be honest) she wasn’t.

To delete the one fair-use photo in a very large article full of free-use photos is, to my mind, nit-picking and bordering on a personal vendetta against McCartney himself. I'm sure you have your reasons, which you will no doubt link to Misplaced Pages pages that support you. I wish you well. --andreasegde (talk) 22:35, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm excited for the flagged reversions test. Hopefully it'll change my mind about leaving. -sesuPRIME 07:54, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Sorry for leaving such a brief message last night, I was very tired.
I don't know what I'm going to do now. There were a few times before where I almost left Misplaced Pages. This was mostly due to the ridiculously lenient policy towards vandals (if it were up to me they'd be blocked for a week for their second offense). Maybe I was jumping the gun by proclaiming my semi-retirement, so for now I'm on a wiki-break for an undetermined amount of time. I'm very, very sorry for all the extra reverting duties this places on you and the others at the Project; that is the primary reason I decided against walking away all those times before. Cheers, and happy editing. :- )(a rare smiley from Sesu) -sesuPRIME 04:40, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Happy Bastille Day!

Dear fellow Wikipedian, on behalf of the Kindness campaign, I just want to wish you a Happy Bastille Day, whether you are French, Republican or not!  :) Happy Editing! Sincerely, --A Nobody 21:04, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Apology, but my concerns remain

You are right; I was mistaken. You undertook a short discussion on the subject. Try Talk:Fascism or Talk:Sarah Palin if you laboring under the mistaken impression that your discussion sprints to AfD are a thorough discussion. However, ANI was not at that time a threat, it was a promise. AfD without discussion is intolerable. AfD with a short discussion is tolerable, but not good form. The discussion was just a rehash of what was said on the revert summaries, and your actions were similar to AfDing as edit war; you had very little to say in the discussion, and your decision to AfD was unilateral, and entirely without consensus. I have no reason to believe you have learned from your mistakes; I expect we will be crossing paths again. Anarchangel (talk) 01:10, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for making WP:NODRAMA a success!

Thank you again for your support of the Great Misplaced Pages Dramaout. Preliminary statistics indicate that 129 new articles were created, 203 other articles were improved, and 183 images were uploaded. Additionally, 41 articles were nominated for DYK, of which at least 2 have already been promoted. There are currently also 8 articles up for GA status and 3 up for FA/FL status. Though the campaign is technically over, please continue to update the log page at WP:NODRAMA/L with any articles which you worked during the campaign, and also to note any that receive commendation, such as DYK, GA or FA status. You may find the following links helpful in nominating your work:

  • T:TDYK for Did You Know nominations
  • WP:GAC for Good Article nominations
  • WP:FAC for Featured Article nominations
  • WP:FLC for Featured List nominations
  • WP:FPC for Featured Picture nominations

Again, thank you for making this event a success! --Jayron32.talk.say no to drama 02:27, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Just a shout

I went ahead and nominated Pokémon Red and Blue for A-class, it'll probably be a good long while before it gets two editors to give it a once over but it should pass and bump it up a notch on the assessment scale.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 19:47, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Delayed reply (been busy as heck x_X), but you might find Google Books to be useful to get an idea what to expect from the book. Its search function is currently a lot more useful than it was, since even for pages it doesn't actively show it will give a chunk of the surrounding paragraph(s) for what you search for in the book. It's damn handy for cultural impact information, that's for sure.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 13:30, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Re:FR/LG

It's honestly worth a shot, FAC's still part crapshoot but the article looks pretty damn good all around and the sources stick. I'd say give it a go, couldn't hurt to try it.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 00:34, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
