Miss Universe 2010, the 59th Miss Universe pageant. Stefanía Fernández from Venezuela, Miss Universe 2009, will crown her successor at the end of this event. More than 80 countries and territories will compete for the title and the pageant will broadcast live on NBC and Telemundo.

Venue

  • Recent reports indicate that the contest could end up in the Bahamas, or Las Vegas (Nevada, USA) if all the other bids fail.
  • Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Singapore, Mar del Plata (Argentina), Mallorca (Spain), and Macau presented proposals to host the 2010 contest.
  • Aruba was bidding, but authorities decided to change for 2011 or 2012.
  • Santa Cruz, Bolivia also wanted to host the pageant but, after a number of meetings, they decided to withdraw the bid on March 13, stating that many of the covenants in the proposed contract were in conflict with the new Bolivian constitution.
  • Croatia presented a bid, first in 2009 and then in 2010, both unsuccessful due to economical problems. On Jan 24th, Croatia announced its withdrawal from the race to host the contest.

  • Azerbaijan will compete in Miss Universe for the first time.

Returning countries and territories

  • Guadeloupe last competed in 1984.
  • British Virgin Islands last competed in 2002.
  • Antigua & Barbuda, Kazakhstan, Trinidad & Tobago last competed in 2008.

Withdraws

  •  Cayman Islands - On September 8, 2009, it was announced that the Miss Cayman Islands 2009 contest would not take place due to lack of funding and sponsorship. Since the winner of the said contest also competes in Miss World, there was no Caymanian representative to Miss World 2009 either.

Contestant Notes

  •  Aruba: Priscilla Lee is the sister of Zizi Lee, 1st Runner-up and Miss World Caribbean at Miss World 2001.
  •  Bolivia: Claudia Arce will compete in Miss Earth 2010 in Vietnam in November. .
  •  Iceland: Magdalena Dubik, Miss Iceland 2009, withdrew from the Miss Universe 2010 pageant because she will participate in a contest of classical music in August 2, where the Miss Iceland 2010 will take place.
  •  Korea: Kim Joo-ri finished as a Top 16 semi-finalist and was named the Queen of Asia & Oceania at Miss World 2009.
  •  Nicaragua: Scharllette Allen is the first black woman to win the national crown of Miss Nicaragua.
  •  Philippines: Maria Venus Raj, the winner of Binibining Pilipinas Universe 2010 was dethroned due to "inconsistencies" between her birth certificate and the personal account of her birth and for a few days was replaced by Helen Nicolette Henson, the 2nd runner-up of the same pageant. On April 10, 2010, the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) reversed their decision allowing Raj to reclaim her title pending correction of the minor technicalities or clerical error contained on her birth record and obtainment of a valid Philippine passport.
