On 7 October 2023, dozens of Hamas militants attacked Yakhini (or Yachini), a moshav close to the border fence with the Gaza Strip, as part of a surprise attack on Israel. The militants killed between four and seven civilian members of the moshav. The moshav's security team were insufficiently armed to prevent the killings.

At least one Israel border police officer was killed during the fight. An Israel Defence Forces (IDF) soldier was wounded while neutralizing two militants but reported to be in a stable condition. All militants were killed later in the day by IDF military units.

Attack

At 7:39 AM a squad of dozens of Hamas militants raided the moshav in the morning. Security camera footage shows them arriving in a van, and entering the moshav through a side gate because the main gate was locked. On the footage two young women were seen running out of the gate and sheltering behind a car as they are shot at by a militant. They are subsequently saved by IDF soldiers. One of them appears to be limping.

After entering the moshav the militants killed four people and later an additional three men. Included in the dead were an 18-year-old man, a man in his home and another man walking his dog.

Moshav Chief Rabbi Ariel Zahavi heard about the raid while on holiday in Thailand. He managed the moshav's response remotely. According to Zahavi the moshav's eighteen person protection team, armed with pistols and only one automatic weapon, were unable to defend the moshav against the militants’ Kalashnikovs. The militants were eventually killed by the YAMAM and Sayeret Matkal IDF units. IDF retired Major General Itai Veruv who reenlisted for the war and his Depth Corps, first fought at Yakhini before fighting battles on the road to Sderot, and Be’eri.

Casualties

Israeli civilians

Seven civilians were killed by militants. One of them was 18-year-old Yehonatan Hajabi, the son of reserve Lieutenant Colonel Nir Hajabi who was on holiday in Baku, Azerbaijan at the time of the attack. On his return to Israel, and before his son's funeral, Hajabi asked to be activated as commander of his battalion the Daniel Brigade saying, "I will find the time to mourn my son – now we have to fight”. He and some of his brigade ensured that his other son and ex-wife, who also lived in Yakhini, were taken to safety.

IDF

Israel border police officer Ravit Assayag was defending the moshav when she was shot and killed by militants on entering a building before her fellow officers. An unnamed IDF major in the Maglan unit, while searching the moshav, encountered and neutralized two militants. He was injured in the fight and was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Hamas

All militants were killed by the IDF by the end of the battle.
