The 2008 United States presidential election in West Virginia took place on November 4, 2008 in West Virginia as part of the 2008 United States presidential election.
John McCain was largely expected to receive the state's five electoral votes, as polling in the state prior to the election showed a nearly double-digit lead in favor of the Republican nominee. Significantly, Barack Obama was the first Democratic presidential candidate since 1916 to win the nationwide presidential election without winning West Virginia. The last time West Virginia went Democratic was for President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore in 1996.
