- Not to be confused with Dumuzid, the Fisherman
Dumuzid, called the Shepherd, from Bad-tibira in Sumer, was the 5th pre-dynastic king on the Sumerian king list (before ca. 2900 BC).
He is considered a precursor to the Babylonian god Tammuz. According to a story found on a broken tablet known as "Inanna prefers the Farmer," he and the farmer-deity Enkimdu argued for some time over who would win the hand of the goddess Inanna. The tablet is broken at this point, and the rest has never been found, but later stories make it clear that Dumuzid was chosen (see "Enkimdu"). The story has a possible parallel in the Biblical story of Cain and Abel (Book of Genesis 4:1-16). (World Book 2005)
