Sectarianism in Pakistan
- Sunni militants linked to the Pakistani Taliban kill at least 20 people and injure 50 in a bombing at a Shiite mosque in the Shikarpur District of Pakistan's Sindh province. (BBC)

International relations

The new Greek government, represented by finance minister Yannis Varoufakis, meets with Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the head of the Eurogroup, and declares that it rejects any further cooperation with its main international lenders known as the troika (the Eurogroup, the IMF and the ECB; instead, it wants to negotiate directly with other European countries. Science and technology

Two balloonists, Troy Bradley of the United States and Leonid Tiukhtyaev of Russia, become the first people to cross the Pacific Ocean in a gas balloon and break the distance record. They are set to land in Mexico on Saturday. (BBC)
