During the Joseon Dynasty, gatekeepers worked alternately for two hours at the gate. During the Japanese colonial era of the 20th century, Japan demolished Heungnyemun and built a building for the Japanese Government-General of Korea on its spot. However, Heungnyemun was rebuilt on the same spot after independence in 1945.
